Abstract

A self-supporting upholstery element for roof panels of automotive vehicles comprises a peripheral frame (10) made of a strong, preferably metal, material. The contour of the frame matches the peripheral contour of the roof panel whereto it is to be adapted. A series of ribs (13) are removably attached to the frame (10). A liner (14) of a sheet material is preformed with a corresponding series of tubular seats (15) for accommodating therein said ribs (13). The assembling is carried out by first inserting the ribs (13) into the seats (15) of the liner (14), and then securing the bent ends of the ribs in succession to the frame (10). Thereby the liner (14) is placed under tension, the free peripheral edges whereof are turned over around the frame (10) and secured to the frame preferably by elastic fastening means. <IMAGE>
