Abstract

A tensioning device for tightening a band or chain over a load on a vehicle, especially railway wagon, exerts a leverage which varies over the stroke of the device. Manually operated lever arm (16) acts through a lever body (15) which, through a lost- motion linkage (17, 18) drives a transmission element (13) in rotation. The periphery of this is arranged as a cam surface around which runs a chain (12) which is secured to the element (13) at one end and to one arm of a two armed lever (10) at the other. The cam surface gives a progressively increasing mechanical advantage as the arm (16) goes through its stroke. The load-holding band or chain is attached, through a spring loaded shock-absorber known per se, to the other arm of the lever (10). A latch (22) is allowed to fall upon appropriate movement of the body (15) and can catch a nose (13a) in the element (13) when the latter's stroke is complete. The latch is released by opposite movement of the body (15) but only after it has gone through its lost-motion relative to the element (13). <IMAGE>
