Abstract

The draining and wet swelling properties of mechanical wood pulp is improved by boiling the mechanical pulp under controlled circumstances in order to allow greater use of mechanical pulp in newsprint. The pulp is boiled in sodium sulphite solution at high temperature for a period sufficient to cause reaction with the pulp but insufficient to cause significant dissolution of the lignin from the pulp
