Abstract

A process for the treatment of effluent which contains solid, sedimentable, colloidal and truly dissolved substances and whose impurities are at least partially of an organic nature, with a reduction in the chemical and biochemical oxygen demand, is characterised in that flocculation aids are added to the effluent and the solids-containing effluent is passed by gravity through a supporting fabric located in a suspending device. During the filtration step, a combination filter composed of a) this supporting fabric and b) a primary filter layer of the solids separated off is formed, by means of which the further effluent introduced is freed of the major part of the solid particles. The filtration through this combination filter has the effect that not only the sedimentable and also a substantial part of the colloidally dissolved substances, but also a major part of the truly dissolved substances are separated off, so that a filtrate is obtained, for the treatment of which a biological oxygen demand is required which is reduced by up to 90 %, relative to a municipal effluent freed of solids. The process can be combined with equipment for biological and/or chemical-physical treatment. Equipment in which the process according to the invention is carried out is described.
