Abstract
Cast inorganic materials of high melting point are produced from at least one of the oxides of the metals of groups IV, V and VI of the Period Table, a metallic reducing agent and a non-metal or an oxide thereof. A small zone of the surface of the mixture of the starting materials is caused to ignite which leads to the burning zone spreading across the starting mixture. The burning is carried out under a pressure of the gaseous medium of 1-5000 atmospheres. The materials obtained, namely carbides, borides, silicides and nitrides as well as alloys can be used for the fabrication of components and equipment in machine tool construction.
