Abstract

1469204 Apparatus for separating liquids MACHINEFABRIEK GEURTSEN DEVENTER BV 10 Feb 1975 [18 Feb 1974] 5592/75 Heading BID Apparatus for separating oil from bilge water comprises a central chamber 10 into which the mixture is delivered at 19 and which has an oil outlet 20 controlled by a valve (not shown), the lower part of chamber 10 being separated by one or more filter cloth sleeves 17, which resist passage of oil, from a chamber 18 which has an outlet 21 for water and is connected by pipe 22 with an upper chamber 9, separated from chamber 10 by a vertically movable diaphragm or bellows 8 sealed to the vessel wall. As oil accumulates against the underside of diaphragm 8 its buoyancy lifts the diaphragm actuating an external signal warning an operator to open the oil outlet valve or opening the valve directly. As shown the diaphragm is weighted by a plate 11 attached at its centre and connected to the actuating links 13-16. Before starting separation, the apparatus is completely filled with water, air vent 24 facilitating this, and chambers 9, 18 and pipe 22 remain filled with water thereafter. A normally closed sludge outlet 23 is provided.
