Abstract

1471606 Oxide filter, contacting gases GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 28 June 1974 [12 Sept 1973] 28906/74 Headings B1F and B1T [Also in Division Cl] A filter for separating particulate metal or metalloid oxides (e.g. enriched uranium oxide) from a gaseous stream of reaction products (e.g. HF) comprises two conduits 36 and 37 each connected with a reactor vessel 11 by a flow channel 32 and two filter chambers 44 and 45 each having an element or elements 46 and 47 (e.g. of sintered 'Morel'). A gaseous stream is withdrawn through pumps 56 and 57 and periodic regular pulses of back flushing gas (e.g. nitrogen) are applied by pumps 60 and 61. Dislodged particulates drop into containers 52 and 53 e.g. of dimensions in sufficient to allow critical limits of enriched uranium oxide to be exceeded. Valves 81 and/ or 64 and 65 control intermittent and alternate use of each condit 36 and 37, or use together in parallel. Oxide may be removed in containers 52 and 53 or transported from them by fluidised bed apparatus attached to their bases (Fig. 5 not shown). The valves may have moving parts of mushroom or hollow ball shapes. The metal or metalloid oxide together with waste gas is produced in reactor 11, Fig. 1a, wherein a first gaseous reactant is passed through conduit 13, and a second gaseous reactant is passed through conduit 15 to a chamber 20 with protruding tubes 24, a further gas is passed through conduit 14 to separate the two streams until they are reacted in flame zone 30 which has pilot flame 31. A further oxidising gas may subsequently be introduced through tubes 18. A tube 19 is provided to monitor the reaction visually, to extract samples or determine temperature.
