Abstract
1482788 Reactors ASEA-ATOM AB 18 Dec 1974 [20 Dec 1973] 54591/74 Heading G6C A water-cooled reactor core comprises a plurality of fuel assemblies supported by vertical water tubes, each fuel assembly having a casing formed with a plurality of first side surfaces parallel to and in direct contact with similar side surfaces of a plurality of adjacent casings, and with second side surfaces which, together with similar side surfaces of other casings, define a plurality of cylindrical, vertical channels for control rods. In the Fig. 2 embodiment, each fuel assembly 4 of a boiling water reactor comprises twelve fuel rods 5 within a square section casing 15 having chamfered corners 18 which define channels 19, some of which serve as guide tubes for the control rod fingers 11 of a control member of the type shown in Fig. 5. The fuel assemblies 4 are arranged in groups of nine, each group being positioned on a common assembly supporting plate 6 (Fig. 4) which has apertures 7 at the top through which water is supplied from a water tube 8 to each of the nine fuel assemblies 4 of the group. Four assembly groups constitute one core module, and each module has one control member. Each control member has sisteen control rod fingers 11 attached to a yoke lying in a horizontal plane and supported by a central shaft 9. The yoke (Fig. 5) comprises four rings connected rigidly to each other and to the shaft 9, each ring surrounding a water tube 8 and being provided with two guide wheels 13 which engage the tube 8. In alternative embodiments, the fuel assembly casing are circular or made with alternately curved and plane cylindrical surfaces (Fig. 7, not shown), are of regular pentagonal crosssection (Fig. 8, not shown), or are of chamfered regular triangular or hexagonal cross-section (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown). The effect of the reduced width of the contact surface between adjoining fuel assembly casings is a reduction in the forced ageing, i.e. plastic deformation even at a relatively low mechanical stress and increasing with the passage of time, of the Zr alloy used for the fuel assembly casings under neutron irradiation.
