Abstract

A method of assembling a cylindrical battery cell (1) comprising: obtaining (60) an enclosure (2) of a battery cell (1), the enclosure (2) containing an electrode assembly (20) and having an end closure; performing (61) a laser cladding process by application of laser energy and dispensing of an additive material to the end closure to form a weld (70) to electrically couple the end closure and the electrode assembly (20) within the enclosure (2), wherein an outside surface of the end closure that receives the laser energy is clad in the additive material.
