Description
PACKAGE WITH A BOX SHAPED BASE AND A LID
Field of invention The invention relates to a package comprising a box shaped base and a lid.
Technical Background When designing packages, the designer typically takes a plurality of
design criteria in consideration. The package should preferably be formed from a single or limited number of blanks, it should be simple and quick to assemble or erect, it should be material efficient, it should be durable enough to protect an object enclosed therein, and it should counter-act being opened unintentionally.
CH 563917 discloses a package having a box shaped base and a lid in which the lid is locked in position using locking tabs. However, the locking tabs are designed to extend out through openings in the side walls. Such openings in the side walls have a negative impact on the appearance of the package and they reduce the capability of the package when it comes to protecting the object enclosed in the package. Moreover, the tabs extending out through the sidewalls of the package are not satisfactory from a handling perspective since the tabs may get caught during handling of the package which may damage the package, the user or any item catching the tabs.
GB 1508954 discloses a package having a box shaped base and a lid in which the lid is said to be locked in position using locking tabs provided on the upper edge of the front wall of the box shaped base interacting with recesses formed in an inside corner of the lid. However, the locking effect is
not especially strong.
Summary of invention lt is an object of the invention to address at least some of the above
mentioned design criteria, such as being formed from a single or a limited number of blanks, be simple and quick to assemble or erect, be material efficient, be durable enough to protect an object enclosed therein and counter-act being opened unintentionally.
This object has been achieved by a package comprising a box shaped base and a lid,
the base having at least one double walled side wall comprising
a first box side wall panel foldably connected to a bottom panel of the base, and
a second box side wall panel foldably connected to the first box side wall panel, the second box side wall panel being configured to form an inside surface of the double walled side wall,
wherein the second box side wall panel is provided with a recess,
the lid comprising a lid panel and at least one lid side wall panel connected to the lid panel,
the lid side wall panel being configured to be folded relative to the lid panel such that the lid side wall panel, as the lid is being closed over the box shaped base, is insertable into the box shaped base alongside the inside surface formed by the second box side wall panel,
the lid side wall panel being provided with a locking tongue being foldably connected to a side of the lid side wall panel being opposite the lid paneL
the locking tongue being configured to be folded outvvardly and, as the lid is closed over the box shaped base, to be positioned alongside an outer surface of the lid side wall panel,
wherein the locking tongue is positioned on the lid side wall panel and the recess is positioned in the second box side wall panel such that, in a
closed state of the package, the locking tongue is received in the recess, wherein opening of the |id, from a closed state of the package, is counteracted by an edge of the locking tongue, received in the recess, abutting an edge of the recess.
The side being opposite the |id panel in the phrase a locking tongue being foldably connected to a side of the |id side wall panel being opposite the |id panel may also be referred to as an edge of the |id side panel being opposite the foldable connection between the |id panel and the |id side panel.
When closing the |id of such a package, the |id is locked in a closed state by the locking tongue being received in the recess. The interaction between the locking tongue and the recess will then prevent unintentional opening of the package. Thus, unintentional opening of the package is strongly counter-acted. Further such a package is possible to make from a single blank, with an efficient use of material and it is durable enough to protect an object held therein. Further, the package can be erected without the use of any adhesive and it can be locked in a closed position without the use of any adhesive. By being folded outwardly, the locking tongue will automatically be pushed outvvardly towards the inner wall of the box. As such the locking tongue will automatically be moved towards and be received by the recess. Further, this has the effect that the locking tongue will stay in the recess and maintaining the locking effect.
Preferred embodiments appear in the dependent claims and in the description.
The |id may be foldably connected to the base.
This allows for a package which can be placed in a closed state in a simple manner by folding the |id with respect to the base.
The package may be made from a single blank.
This allows for a package which can be made with an efficient use of material and which is easy to use from a logistics perspective.
The package may be made from a paper-based material.
A paper-based material is a suitable material for such a package as it both provides robustness and durability and can be folded. The edge of the locking tongue may be defined by a contour line of the locking tongue and a material thickness of the locking tongue.
The edge of the recess may be defined by a contour line of the recess and a thickness of the second box side wall panel.
The first box side wall panel and the second box side wall panel may be arranged one after the other, as seen in a flat laid state, in a first direction, the first box side wall panel and the second box side wall panel each extending in the first direction and in a second direction, the second direction being transverse to the first direction. By this, the side wall can be made in a simple manner by folding the two side wall panels relative to the base and each other. Further the side wall can be made robust
The recess may be formed by manufacturing the second box side wall panel such that an outer corner, as seen in the first direction and in the second direction in a flat laid state, is absent. By forming the recess in this manner, it is possible to form the recess in a simple and easy manner. By forming the recess in this manner, it is also possible to form the recess prior to erecting the package. By forming the recess and the first and second box side wall panels in this manner, it is possible to close off the recess on the outside of an erected package by the fist box side wall panel. Thus, the locking tongue can be kept in the recess and still be protected from being accessed from the outside. By forming the recess such that an outer corner is absent, the locking mechanism between the locking tongue and the recess can be positioned close to an edge of the package being located at a significant distance from an actual or perceived hinge line of the lid panel. Thus, the locking mechanism and the package will be more robust and less likely to be opened unintentionally.
The package may comprise a first double walled side wall and a second double walled side wall, the second double walled side wall being opposite to the first double walled side wall.
By this it is possible to provide a recess in two side walls and thus two locking tongues on the lid. Thus, the package can have two lockingmechanisms on opposite sides of the package. Thus, the package can be even more securely locked in a closed state.
The angle between edge of the recess and the fold line, at the connection between the edge of the recess and the fold line, is preferably at most 75 degrees.
By this the risk of tearing of the panel which the recess is made from is decreased. Especially the risk of tearing the blank at the connection between the edge of the recess and the fold line is decreased.
The invention may also in short be said to relate to a package comprising a box shaped base and a lid,
the base having a double walled side wall provided with a recess,
the lid having a lid side panel being insertable into the base alongside the inside surface of the double walled side wall and being provided with a locking tongue configured to be folded outwardly and to be positioned alongside an outer surface of the lid side panel,
the locking tongue and the recess being positioned such that, in a closed state of the package, the locking tongue is received in the recess,
wherein opening of the lid, from a closed state of the package, is counter-acted by an edge of the locking tongue, received in the recess, abutting an edge of the recess.

The recess 25 is positioned at a front outer corner of the second box side wall panel 23. ln Figure 3B, the recess 25 is positioned at a distance from an outer corner of the second box side wall panel 23. lt may e.g. be positioned between the two side wall Iocking protrusions 28. The shape and size of the Iocking tongue 35 is preferably such that it fills at least a major part of the recess 25 which it is intended to be received in. The Iocking tongue 35 may have the shape of a triangle. The recess 25 has preferably a shape and a size similar to the shape and size of the Iocking tongueThe edge of the Iocking tongue 35 and the edge of the recess 25, which edges are intended to abut each other when the Iocking tongue is received in the recess 25, may each have the shape of straight lines.
lt is contemplated that there are numerous modifications of the embodiments described herein, which are still within the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
lt may, e.g., be noted that although the Iocking tongues 35, 35' and the recesses 25, 25' are shown as having straight line edges, other shapes are conceivable. Examples of such alternative shapes are, e.g., a concave shape, or a convex shape. lt is however preferable that the angle between edge of the recess and the fold line, at the connection between the edge of the recess
and the fold line, is at most 75 degrees also for these shapes.
