Claims. (Cl. 229-45) The invention relates to hinged cover boxes of paperboard and the like.
Summary l By my invention I provide a hinged cover box having a simple but effective lock which secures the cover with the use only of parts formed from elements of the box itself. The bottom and cover sections of the box telescope into one another with a wall of one section in close overlapping relation to a complementary wall of the other section when the box is closed, one of said Walls having a tab which doubles over between the complementary walls to present a locking edge intermediate the upper and lower edges of such wall, and the other of these complementary walls has a shoulder projecting on the side toward the first wall for engagement with the locking edge of the tab. In my preferred construction triangular tabs formed from the top outer corners of the front wall of the bottom part of the box are foldable against the outside of the front wall for engagement with edges of the glue tabs within the front wall of the cover section. These glue tabs have their upper edges disposed below the top of the box so that when the box is closed the aforesaid triangular tabs snap into the recess of the cover above the glue tabs. It will be observed that the locking means so provided are extremely simple, operate automatically as the cover is snapped shut, and require no additional parts and no additional paperboard stock in forming the blank for the box. Moreover, the steps employed in manufacturing the box are exactly the same as in making the conventional hinged cover box minus the lock. To secure the locking function it is necessary only to flip down the locking tabs before or during the operation of closing the box. My invention is applicable to conventional types of hinged cover boxes in which there is a bottom section with opstanding Walls and a hinged cover section with walls adapted to surround the upstanding walls of the bottom section.
Description In the drawings i have illustrated the application of my invention to one of the common forms of hinged cover box in accordance with what I consider to be its best embodiment.
Fig. l is a perspective view of the box with the cover in a partly closed position.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the box, fully closed, with part of the front wall of the cover broken away to expose the lock.
Fig. 3 is a detail section through the front end of the box, showing how the cover squeezes down over the locking tabs. Here the cover approaches its closed position.
Fig. 4 is a detail section through the front end of the box, taken as shown at 4 4 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is the blank from which the carton is formed.
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of a modified box construction, with the cover in partly closed position.
Fig. 7 is a similar view of the modified box, fully closed,
ICC
with part of the side wall of the bottom section broken away to expose the lock.
Fig. S is a detail section through the front end of the box, taken as shown at 8 8 in Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is the blank from which the carton of Figs. 6 8 is formed.
in the preferred construction illustrated, the blank has a bottom section 6, cover section 7. The bottom section comprises bottom panel 8, and panels to form side walls 9 and front wall 10. Similarly, cover section 7 comprises top panel 1l, and panels to form side walls and front Wall 13. Bottom and cover panels 3, 1i are joined by a common rear wall panel 14. Side walls 9 and 12 are joined by foldable webs 15. Glue tabs 16 and i7 extend from the bottom and cover side walls 9 and 12 respectively. The several panels and tabs of the blank are defined by the usual score lines about which folding occurs during the operation of setting up the box. These score lines are clearly indicated in Fig. 5, and, being conven` tional, require no further description for the carton manufacturer.
When the box is set up, tabs lo are adhesively secured to the inside of the front wall lil of the bottom section, and tabs 17 are adhesively secured to the inside of the front wall 13 of the cover section. This completes the formation of the box in accordance with usual procedures and any Well known paper box machinery can be ernployed without modification being required to suit the special llocking feature as provided in my box as will now be described.
Triangular locking tabs 1S are formed in the top outer corners of the front wall itl of the bottom section of the box, these tabs being foldable about score lines 19 to overlie the outside of the front wall as best shown in Figs. l and 2. Glue tabs 16 are notched out at 26, opposite the location of the triangular tabs. This makes it easier to fold the triangular tabs into the position to present locking edges 21 below the top of the front wall il?.
Glue tabs 17 xed'to the inside of front wall 13 of the cover section have their upper edges 22 disposed below the top of the box for engagement with the locking edges 23. of the triangular tabs when the box is closed. This locking engagement is shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The natural resistance of the tabs 21 to being folded tlat against the front Wall ii), or what is known in the folding carton art as the lig t of the paperboard stock, urges tabs 21 outwardly to insure a rm engagement between their lool;- ing edges 21 and the projecting shoulder inside the front wall of the cover section. In my preferred construction this projecting shoulder is constituted by the upper edges 22 of glue tabs 17.
in the preferred construction described, the triangular tabs 18, before being folded against the outside of the front wall, extend slightly beyond the lateral edges of the front wall to form the projections 23. These projections make it easy to fold down the locking tabs by a forward wiping motion along the side wall of the bottom section. To assist further in this operation, the side Walls 9 of the bottom section may, if desired, be notched out at their top front corners. This modification is indicated in Fig. 5 where the outlines of such notches are shown by the dotdash lines 24. Such notches` facilitate grasping the triangular tabs manually or with mechanical'ngers for folding them into locking position.
The operation of closing the box is shown in Fig. 3. The side and front walls of the cover surround the side and front walls of the bottom section. Glue tabs 17 slide over the locking tabs, and when the box is fully closed (Fig. 4), the locking tabs snap into the recess 25 of the cover above the glue tabs i7.
in the modified construction illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9 3 inclusive, the blank has a bottom section 26, cover section 27. The bottom section comprises bottom panel 23 and panels to form side walls 29 and front wall 30. Similarly, cover section 27 comprises top panel 31 and panels Vto ormside walls 32 and front wall or hap 33. Bottom and cover Ypanels 2S, 31 are joined by a common rear wall panel 34. Locking tlaps 33 and 36 extend from Vthe front wall 30 of the bottom section and the common rear wall panel 34 respectively. Side walls'29 of the bottom section are provided with infolding extensions 37.Y The several panels and aps of the blank are 4defined by the usual score lines about which folding occurs during the operation of setting up the box. These score lines are clearly indicated in Pig. 9, and, being conventional, require no further description for the carton manufacturer.
When the box is set up, aps 35 and 36 are brought inside of side wall panels 29, as the Vseveral wall panels 29, 30 and 34 are erected.` As the wall panels reach their fully erected, or vertical, position, the infolding extensions 3'7 of side wallpancls V29 are folded inwardly and downwardly against wall panels 29, and naps 35 and 36, so as to secure the iiaps in place between the side wall Y with triangular tabs 21 Yin its top outer corners foldable against the outside of the front wall to present locking edges 21 below the top of the front wall, and a'cover section 7 hinged to the bottom section at a location toward the back of the box, the cover section having a front wall 13 with glue tabs 17 iixed to the inside of the front wall, these glue tabs having their upper'edges 22 disposed below the top of the box for engagement with the locking edges 21 ,of the triangular tabs when the box is closed.
The terms and expressions which I have employed are used in a descriptive and not a limiting sense, and I have no intention of excluding such equivalents of the invenpanels and the extensions 37 thereof. The extensions 37 may be locked in place by means of tabs 38 which snap into slits 39 at the sides of the bottom of the box.
Triangular locking tabs 40 are formed in the bottom outer corners of the side walls 32 of the cover section of the box, these tabs being foldable about score lines 41 to overlie the outside of the side walls as best shown .in
Side wall extensions 37 are notched out at 42, providing a shoulder projecting on the side toward the walls 32 of the cover section for engagement with the locking edges 43 of the triangular tabs when the box is closed. This locking engagement is shown in Figs. 7 and 8. rI'he natural Y to Figs. l to 5, utilizing the liaps 35 as'glue tabs and cutting ofi the lower partsV thereof so asrto provide a locking shoulder simiiar to that shown at 22 in Fig. 2. in this case the side wall extensions 37 can be omitted and the locking edges 43 of the triangular tabs will engage the underside of the glue tabs 35, the construction in this tion described, or of portions thereof, as fall within the purview of the claims. I
