Description
A POSITIONING ARRANGEMENT, A VEHICLE COMPRISING SUCH ANARRANGEMENT AND A METHOD OF POSITIONING A POSITION SENSITIVEDEVICE IN A VEHICLE TECHNICAL FIELD The invention relates to a positioning arrangement and to a vehicle including such apositioning arrangement. Further the invention relates to a method of positioning a position sensitive device in an angularly locked position in a vehicle.BACKGROUND ln the automotive industry of today many sensor devices are provided at differentpositions inside and around a vehicle. Typical example of such sensor devices arerotation sensors, rain sensors, speed sensors, driver aiding cameras and the like. Manyof these sensor devices are provided in relatively exposed positions and many devicesare position sensitive such that it is of uttermost importance that they are provided in an accurate and secure position in the vehicle. ln some applications a cylindrical sensor is provided in a cylindrical opening. ln the priorart it is common to provide such a sensor With a protruding element and to provide acorresponding axial recess or track along one side of the cylindrical opening in order toreceive the protruding element sensor to thereby ascertain that the sensor is mountedinside the cylindrical opening in an angularly correct position. This arrangement demandsthat a track or the like is machined inside the otherwise cylindrical opening. For a skilledperson it is always interesting to minimise the number of machining steps. Other solutions have therefore been considered. ln EP 1 284 424 A2 a sensor fastening arrangement is disclosed in which a rotationsensor is arranged opposed to a rotation wheel for sensing the rotation of a rotating axle.ln order to correctly register the rotation, the sensor needs to be provided in a correctangular position with respect to the rotation wheel. This is solved by means of a mountingbracket with a guide pin for guiding the mounting bracket into a correct position. Thesensor comprises a protruding element so as to correctly position a sensor with respectto the mounting bracket. This is an effective but complicated solution to the problem ofcorrectly positioning a position sensitive device in an angularly locked position in a vehicle. lt would be advantageous to achieve an arrangement and method overcoming, or at least alleviating, at least one or some of the drawbacks of the prior art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION lt is an object of the invention to provide an arrangement and method that enablespositioning of a position sensitive device, which is readily implementable in an existingconstruction without the need for machining or any other specific adaptation of the structure in which the position sensitive device is to be positioned.
This object is achieved by means of the invention in accordance with the first, second and third aspect thereof.
According to a first aspect the invention relates to a positioning arrangement comprisinga position sensitive device, the positioning arrangement comprising: - a bushing, and - a housing in which the position sensitive device is provided, wherein the bushing is a cylindrically shaped sheet including a longitudinal slit, thebushing being arranged to fit inside a cylindrical opening, the housing includes a cylindrical body arranged to fit inside the bushing, and the sensor comprises a guiding protrusion extending longitudinally along the cylindricalbody, wherein the guiding protrusion is arranged to fit inside the longitudinal slit of the bushingwhen the bushing is positioned inside the cylindrical opening, so as to angularly lock the housing with respect to the bushing and With respect to the cylindrical opening.
The invention solves the problem of arranging a sensor in a cylindrical opening in acontrolled rotational position by means of the position guiding of the bushing's slit. Thesolution is specifically advantageous in that it allows for rotational control without thenecessity of performing machining inside the cylindrical opening. Preferably, the bushingis arranged to fit tightly inside a cylindrical opening so as to guarantee that it stays put.The bushing with a longitudinal slit is a most relevant part of the inventive positioningarrangement. The specific design of the bushing may however vary as long as a position locking slit is provided by the bushing. ln view of that the guiding protrusion facilitates the angular locking of the housing withrespect to the bushing and with respect to the cylindrical opening it may also be referred to as a rotational locking element.
According to embodiments of the positioning arrangement the bushing is comprised of a corrosion resistant material.
A problem in the prior art is that corrosion may affect the interaction between the sensorand the surrounding cylindrical opening, such that it may not be possible to securelyremove the sensor from the opening, if desired. This problem is effectively solved by arranging a corrosion resistant bushing outside the housing.According to specific embodiments the bushing is comprised of stainless steel.
This presents a long lasting and rigid solution to the corrosion problem. Further, stainless steel is a rigid material providing a reliable press fit inside a cylindrical opening.
According to embodiments of the positioning arrangement the bushing has a cylindricalperipheral surface, which is interrupted by the longitudinal slit, and wherein the cylindricalperipheral surface on at least one axial end portion of the bushing comprises acircumferential chamfer at which an outer diameter of the cylindrical peripheral surface decreases axially outwards from a central portion of the bushing.
The circumferential chamfer is advantageous for two reasons, depending on which side of the bushing that is first entered into the cylindrical opening.
Firstly, when the bushing is entered with the chamfer at its leading end, the chamfermakes it easier to enter the bushing into the opening. Further though, when the bushingis entered with the chamfer at its trailing end, it facilitates removing of the bushing if thisis desired. This is due to that that the chamfer, when arranged to face the orifice of theopening, effectively allows for a tool to grip the bushing and press it inwards such that it may be compacted in diameter and easily removed from the opening.
According to embodiments of the positioning arrangement the longitudinal slit, in at leastone axial end portion of the bushing, has a widened portion, in which a gap width of the longitudinal slit increases gradually axially outwards from a central portion of the bushing.
The widened portion allows for the guiding protrusion of the housing's cylindrical body to easier enter inside the longitudinal slit of the bushing.
According to embodiments of the positioning arrangement the longitudinal slit, in a centralportion of the bushing, has a constant gap width, arranged to guide the guiding protrusion of the housing during entrance thereof and to clamp it when inserted.
The constant gap width provides an alternative of securing the housing without unduly complicating the entering/insertion of it.
According to embodiments of the positioning arrangement the bushing has a symmetrical shape and comprises two opposed axial end portions of the same shape.
The bushing may hence be reflectionally symmetrical with respect to a p|ane of symmetryextending through the centre of the bushing with respect to its longitudinal extensionalong its longitudinal axis X, such that the normal to the p|ane of symmetry is parallel to the longitudinal axis X of the bushing.
Further though, the bushing may also be reflectionally symmetrical with respect to alongitudinal section along the axial direction X of the bushing, which longitudinal sectionruns in the centre of the longitudinal slit and along the diametrically opposed part of the bushing.
The symmetric design of the bushing has several advantages, including the facilitation ofthe machining of the bushing, and the facilitation of the mounting thereof, as the bushing may be mounted in either direction with maintained advantages. .'\.~>.\_.-.-.ií;»\,-\ å» v-NÅE. .\~..š;l;.\~\.-\;>\š.-\ på: š-:WN P .\~..\~§+l.-\.-.2. \ .\. .lv-md t. _» .-.\....\. .s-.uß-.t-tk» .~ \..\.~ _.\.\.us .MMA-H \\-.s.\,_.t\.; s. :ga :Ågjiaxial locking unit isarranged to lock the housing from axial movement, so as to prevent the housing from moving out from the cylindrical opening. This is an advantageous way of achieving a secure fastening of the housing inside thebushing. ln addition to providing the desired securing of the housing, the spring sleevealso provides an additional allowance for the precision of the diameter of the bushing, thediameter of the cylindrical body of the housing, and to a certain extent to the precision ofthe diameter of the cylindrical opening. The last effect is due to that the bushing isdeformable and will fill out the full diameter of the cylindrical opening, up to a certain point.
According to embodiments of the positioning arrangement the axial locking unit comprises a longitudinal gap opening arranged to overlap the longitudinal slit of the bushing and to allow access of the guiding protrusion into the longitudinal slit of the bushing.
According to embodiments of the positioning arrangement the axial locking unitcomprises a guide member arranged to interact with the longitudinal slit of the bushing soas to angularly lock the axial locking unit with respect to the bushing and with respect to the cylindrical opening. ln this way the mounting of the axial locking unit is fail-safe, in that it may only be inserted into a correct position.
According to a second aspect the invention relates to a vehicle comprising a cylindricalopening for holding a position sensitive device, wherein a positioning arrangement as presented above is arranged in the cylindrical opening.
The vehicle may comprise a plurality of cylindrical openings for holding position sensitivedevices and a plurality of positioning arrangements may be arranged in different cylindrical openings in the vehicle.
According to a third aspect the invention relates to a method of positioning a positionsensitive device in an angularly locked position in a vehicle, the method comprising: - inserting a bushing into a cylindrical opening provided to house a sensor, thebushing having a cylindrical shape with a longitudinal slit, - ensuring that the bushing is securely positioned in a correct rotational positionwith the longitudinal slit arranged in a predefined angular segment with respect to thecylindrical opening, - providing a housing for housing the position sensitive device, the housingincluding a cylindrical body with a guiding protrusion extending longitudinally along thecylindrical body, and - inserting the housing into the cylindrical opening in a rotational direction thatallows the guiding protrusion to slide into the longitudinal slit so as to angularly lock the housing with respect to the bushing and With respect to the cylindrical opening.
According to embodiments of the method the inserting of the bushing into the cylindricalopening is performed by the aid of a reference point, and wherein the ensuring that thebushing is securely positioned in a correct rotational position is made with respect to the reference point.
The reference point may either be a specific detail on the axle part that comprises thecylindrical opening, or it may be a reference point in the mounting arrangement whichmakes sure that, as long as the axle part has a known position with respect to themounting arrangement, the bushing will be securely positioned in a correct rotationa| position inside the cylindrical opening.
According to embodiments of the method the housing is secured inside the cylindricalopening by arranging an axial locking unit in the form of a cylindrical spring s|eeve insidethe bushing prior to inserting the housing, wherein the spring s|eeve includes resilientportions arranged to provide a friction lock between the bushing and the cylindrical body of the housing.
The method is well adapted to be implemented for all embodiments of the positioning arrangement as described above.
Additional embodiments and advantages of the invention are apparent from the detailed description and the appended drawings.
