Brief description of drawinqs 12. 12. id="p-12" id="p-12" id="p-12" id="p-12"
[0012] The invention is now described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective overview of a drain assembly according to the invention;Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the drain assembly of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3a shows a mounting element used in the drain assembly shown in Fig. 1;Fig. 3b is a sectional view through the mounting element of Fig. 3a; Figs. 4a-d show different steps of the assembly of the drain assembly of Fig. 1.
Description of embodiments 13. 13. id="p-13" id="p-13" id="p-13" id="p-13"
[0013] ln the following, a detailed description of a drain assembly according tothe invention will be described. 14. 14. id="p-14" id="p-14" id="p-14" id="p-14"
[0014] Fig. 1 is a perspective overview of a linear drain assembly, generallydesignated 1. The drain assembly comprises an open-topped elongated channelmember 10 which is adapted to be fixed in a floor structure (not shown). To thisend, leg supports 12 with height adjustable legs 12a may be attached to theunderside of the channel member 10. By means of these leg supports, the channelmember 10 may be positioned and leveled in the floor structure for subsequentembedment. The channel member 10 is preferably made by a suitable plasticmaterial but can also be made at least partly by a suitable metal or metal alloy, such as aluminum or stainless steel. ln Fig.1 the channel member 10 is providedwith two end elements 14, one attached to each end portion of the channelmember 10. These end elements 14 close the channel in the end portions. ln otherconfigurations (not shown), end elements may serve the purpose of inter- connecting two channel members. . . id="p-15" id="p-15" id="p-15" id="p-15"
[0015] An elongated cover 20 is adapted to cover the interior of the channel member 10. This cover is preferably made by stainless steel and is attached to the channel member 10 by means of a plurality, in the shown example five mounting elements 30. 16. 16. id="p-16" id="p-16" id="p-16" id="p-16"
[0016] The structure of the drain assembly 1 will now be described in moredetail with reference to Fig. 2, showing a cross-sectional view of the channelmember 10 at one of the mounting elements 30. The channel element 10comprises a bottom 10a, from which two side walls 10b extend upward. A wing-shaped flange 10c extends laterally outward from each of the side walls 10b. Thechannel member is, before embedment, positioned to that the upper surfaces ofthese flanges will be in level with the floor in which the channel member isembedded. A drain opening (not shown) may be formed in the bottom 10a of thechannel member 10, allowing the attachment of a siphon thereto. 17. 17. id="p-17" id="p-17" id="p-17" id="p-17"
[0017] The side walls 10b of the channel member 10 are on the inside thereofprovided with ridges and grooves extending in the longitudinal direction of thechannel member. The mounting element 30 is provided with ridges and groovesmating with the ridges and grooves of the side walls 10b of the channel member10, whereby the mounting element 30 can be mounted at predefined distancesfrom the bottom of the channel member, as will be described in detail below withreference to Figs. 4a-d. The distance between two adjacent ridges (or grooves) isin a preferred embodiment 2.85 mm, which is also the resolution by which themounting element 30 can be attached to the channel member 10. However, thisdistance may be anywhere within a range of 2 - 4 mm. 18. 18. id="p-18" id="p-18" id="p-18" id="p-18"
[0018] The mounting element 30, see also Figs. 3a and 3b, comprises a body32 provided with four side surfaces and a preferably thoroughgoing threaded hole32a adapted to receive a screw 34. The screw is made up of a treaded stem 34aand a head 34b. The upper surface of the head 34b is provided with a profile 34cwith a hexagonal outer shape. The distance between two opposite sides of theprofile 34c is adapted to allow mounting of the cover 20 on top of the screw head34b, see fig. 2. ln other words, the cover 20 has an inverted U shape with anessentially planar upper section 20a and two flanges 20b extending down from theouter edges of the upper section 20a, and the distance between two oppositesides of the profile 34c essentially corresponds to the distance between the two flanges 20b. The width of the cover 20, i.e., the distance between the two flanges20b thereof, is preferably slightly smaller than the distance between the two sidewalls 10b of the channel member 10, so that small slits are formed between thecover 20 and the wing-shaped flanges 10c, allowing water to pass there through. 19. 19. id="p-19" id="p-19" id="p-19" id="p-19"
[0019] The position of the cover 20 can be height adjusted or fine-tuned byturning the screw 34 one sixth of a turn, wherein the pitch of the screw threadspreferably is adapted so that this correspond to a height adjustment of 0.25 mm inthe preferred embodiment, i.e., a full turn of the screw corresponds to a heightadjustment of 1.5 mm. However, this value may be anywhere within the range of0.6 - 3.0 mm. . . id="p-20" id="p-20" id="p-20" id="p-20"
[0020] Two opposite side surfaces of the body 32 are provided with ridges andgrooves 32b, while the two other side surfaces 32c are smooth. As can be seen inFig. 3a, two opposite intersections between the side surfaces of the body 32 arerounded, i.e., having a radius, while the two other intersections are sharp. Thedistance between the opposite side surfaces provided with ridges and grooves 32bcorresponds to the distance between the ridges and grooves of the two walls 10bof the channel member 10. However, the distance between the other side surfaces32c of the body 32 is smaller - less than the distance between the two walls 10bof the channel member 10. The function of this design will now be explained withreference to Figs. 4a-d, explaining the assembly of the drain assembly. 21. 21. id="p-21" id="p-21" id="p-21" id="p-21"
[0021] ln a first step, see Fig. 4a, when the channel member 10 has beenpositioned in the floor and been embedded therein, the mounting elements areinserted into the area between the two opposing side walls 10b of the channelmember 10, with the smooth surfaces 32c of the mounting element 30 facing theside walls 10b of the channel member 10. This insertion is possible due to the factthat the distance between the two smooth surfaces 32c of the mounting element30 is less than the distance between the two side walls 10b. ln this way, themounting element 30 is lowered to a level which is deemed to be appropriate forsubsequent assembly of the cover 30 onto the head 34b of the screw 34. 22. 22. id="p-22" id="p-22" id="p-22" id="p-22"
[0022] ln a second step, see Fig. 4b, the mounting element 30 is turnedclockwise about the center axis thereof. This is possible thanks to the design withtwo rounded corners. The grooves and ridges 32b of the mounting element 30also extend to the rounded corners, so that, by turning the mounting element 30,the grooves and ridges 32b of the mounting element 30 and the grooves andridges of the side walls 10b of the channel member 10 start to engage. Thisturning of the mounting element 30 continues until it has been turned a quarter ofa full turn, see Fig. 4c. Further turning is not possible due to the sharp intersectionbetween the two walls of the body 32 opposite to the rounded intersections. By theturning of the mounting element 30, it has been firmly attached to the channelmember 10 as a height which is approximately suitable for the mounting of thecover 20. 23. 23. id="p-23" id="p-23" id="p-23" id="p-23"
[0023] All mounting elements 30 are attached to the channel member 10 in thesame way and at the same height, i.e., engaging the same ridges and grooves ofthe side walls 10b of the channel member 10. 24. 24. id="p-24" id="p-24" id="p-24" id="p-24"
[0024] ln a third, final step, the level of the upper surface of the screw 34 is fine-adjusted by turning the screw so that the head 34b extends a suitable distancefrom the body 32. The cover 20 is finally mounted onto the top of the screw head34b, see Fig. 4d. lt will be appreciated that the mounting elements 30 preferablyare attached to the channel member 10 fully lowered into the channel formedbetween the two side walls 10b thereof, so that the upper surface of the cover 20will be essentially flush with the upper surfaces of the wing-shaped flanges 10c,thus forming a smooth surface for walking on. . . id="p-25" id="p-25" id="p-25" id="p-25"
[0025] A preferred embodiment of a drain assembly according to the inventionhas been described. lt will be realized that this may be modified within theappended claims without departing from the inventive idea. Thus, the uppersurface of the screw head may be provided with a profile different from ahexagonal outer shape, such as square or octagonal, as long as it cooperates withthe cover. 26. 26. id="p-26" id="p-26" id="p-26" id="p-26"
[0026] ln the described embodiment, the two other side surfaces of themounting elements not being provided with ridges and grooves are smooth. However, it will be realized that these two other side surfaces may take any shapeand have any structure, as long as the distance between them allows insertion of the mounting elements between the side walls of the channel member. 27. 27. id="p-27" id="p-27" id="p-27" id="p-27"
[0027] ln the described embodiment, two opposite intersections between theside surfaces of the body are rounded while the two other intersections are sharp.lt will be realized that these two other intersections may take other shapes, as longas the mounting elements may be turned into place in the channel member. 28. 28. id="p-28" id="p-28" id="p-28" id="p-28"
[0028] An elongated channel member adapted for fixture in a floor has beendescribed. lt will be appreciated that the inventive idea is applicable also to other kind of elongated channel members.
