A CONTROL DEVICE FOR A VEHICLE COMPRISING A SELECTOR MEANS WITH A PARKING BRAKE POSITION AND A VEHICLE COMPRISING SUCH A CON-TROL DEVICE TECHNICAL FIELD The invention relates to a control device for a vehicle, and a vehicle comprising such a control device, according to the appended claims.
BACKGROOUND AND PRIOR ART In vehicles, and especially for heavier vehicles such as trucks, a parking brake control device may be used for activating a parking brake when the vehicle is parked in a standstill position. The parking brake control device may be a lever arm or a knob arranged on the dashboard of the vehicle. When activating the parking brake air may be evacuated from a pneumatic brake circuit and springs acting on the brakes may exert a load on the brakes and thus may prevent the wheels of the vehicle from rolling.
The vehicle may be provided with a trailer. A trailer brake control device may be used for activating brakes arranged at wheels of the trailer when the vehicle is parked in a standstill position. The trailer brake control device may be a lever arm or a knob arranged on the dashboard of the vehicle. When activating the trailer brake, air may be evacuated from the pneumatic brake circuit and springs acting on the brakes may exert a load on the brakes and thus may prevent the trailer wheels from rolling.
Document US2010/0056331 A1 discloses a control device for operating a gear box of a vehicle and a system for gear shift and parking brake actuation. Operation of both a gear box and a parking brake may be accomplished by means of one and the same selector means. The selector means may be arranged in a position in the vicinity of the steering wheel of a vehicle.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Known control devices for the parking brake and trailer brake, which are provided with a lever arm or a knob arranged on the dashboard, may influence on the available space on the dashboard, especially if information screens or large displays should be arranged at the dashboard. Known control devices for the parking brake and trailer brake may not fulfil the needs for the use in a modern heavy vehicle where the parking brake control device and the trailer brake control device both have to be easily accessible and easy to operate.
There is a need to further develop a control device for the parking brake and trailer brake that may not influence on the available space of the dashboard of a vehicle.
There is also a need to develop a control device for the parking brake and trailer brake where the parking brake control device and the trailer brake control device both may be easily accessible and easy to operate.
The object of the invention is therefore to further develop a control device for the parking brake and trailer brake that may not influence on the available space of the dashboard of a vehicle.
Another object of the invention is to develop a control device for the parking brake and trailer brake, where the parking brake control device and the trailer brake control device both may be easily accessible and easy to operate.
The herein mentioned objects may be achieved by the above-mentioned control device for a vehicle, and a vehicle comprising such a control device according to the independent claims.
According to the invention the control device for a vehicle may comprise a selector means, which is arranged in a position in the vicinity of a steering wheel of the vehicle; the control device is provided with a parking brake position, at which a parking brake is activated. The control device may also be provided with a trailer brake position, at which a trailer brake is activated.
Such control device for the parking brake and trailer brake may not influence on the available space of the dashboard since the selector means, provided with both the parking brake position and the trailer brake position, may be arranged in a position in the vicinity of the steering wheel of a vehicle. When the selector means may be arranged in a position in the vicinity of the steering wheel, information screens and large displays may have enough space to be arranged at the dashboard. Such control device may fulfil the needs for the use in a modern heavy vehicle, since the selector means, provided with both the parking brake position and the trailer brake position, may be arranged in a position in the vicinity of the steering wheel of a vehicle and thus may be easily accessible and easy to operate. At the parking brake position the parking brake may be activated for brakes at all wheels on the vehicle, both on the truck and on the trailer. In the trailer brake position only the brakes at all wheels on the trailer may be activated.
According to a further aspect of the invention the trailer brake position may be arranged within a first operating region, in which the trailer brakes are gradually applied.
The first operating region for gradually applying the trailer brake may be used to brake the trailer and thus also the entire vehicle in situations where there may be a risk for instability in and/or jack-knifing of the vehicle. Such a situation may happen on a slippery road and/or on downward slopes.
According to a further aspect of the invention the first operating region may be arranged to control the braking force of the trailer brake from zero at a first point of the first operating region to full braking force at a second point of the first operating region.
When the braking force of the trailer brake may be controlled from zero at a first point of the first operating region to full braking force at a second point of the first operating region the driver of the vehicle may adapt the braking force of the vehicle depending on the speed of the vehicle and the road conditions.
According to a further aspect of the invention the parking brake position may be arranged within a second operating region in which the wheel brakes of all wheels of the vehicle are applied, which second operating region may comprise a first point at which the parking brake is deactivated and a second point corresponding to the parking brake position.
Arranging such a second operating region for the parking brake in combination with the trailer brake position at the same control device may fulfil the needs for the use in a modern heavy vehicle, since the selector means, provided with both the parking brake position, having the second operating region, and the trailer brake position, may be arranged in a position in the vicinity of the steering wheel of a vehicle and thus may be easily accessible and easy to operate.
According to a further aspect of the invention the control device may comprise a first control element to be actuated so as to allow a movement of the selector means from the first point.
The first control element may avoid unintentional activation of the trailer brake or the parking brake by the driver in situations where the trailer brake or the parking brake should not be activated.
According to a further aspect of the invention the control device comprises a second control element to be actuated together with, and at the same time as, the first control element in order to allow a movement of the selector means from the first point.
Such second control element may further avoid unintentional activation of the trailer brake or the parking brake by the driver in situations where the trailer brake or the parking brake should not be activated.
According to a further aspect of the invention the control device may have a threshold position at which a predetermined force may be exceeded in order to move the selector means further to the second point.
Such threshold position may avoid unintentional activation of the trailer brake or the parking brake by the driver in situations where the trailer brake or the parking brake should not be activated.
According to a further aspect of the invention the control device is provided with a return spring for returning the selector means to the first point.
Such return spring may return the selector means to the first point after parking brake has been activated. Thus, the parking brake may be activated by moving the selector means to the parking brake position at which the parking brake is activated. When releasing the selector means at the parking brake position, the selector means may return automatically to the first point by means of the return spring.
According to a further aspect of the invention the parking brake is activated by holding the selector means at the parking brake position within a predetermined period of time.
The parking brake may be activated by moving the selector means to the parking brake position. When holding the selector means at the parking brake position in a predetermined period of time the parking brake may be activated. Thereafter, when releasing the selector means at the parking brake position, the selector means may return automatically to the first point. When a predetermined period of time is used for holding the selector means at the parking brake position, unintentional activation of the parking brake by the driver in situations where the trailer brake or the parking brake should not be activated may be avoided.
According to a further aspect of the invention the control device may comprise a detector means arranged to sense the position of the selector means in the first operating region.
The detector means may be electrical which may result in that the selector means may be designed with small dimensions and thus require less space in the environment at the dashboard. The detector means may alternatively be pneumatic or be semi-pneumatic/electric, so that it may be possible to integrate the control device in a pneumatic air brake system.
According to a further aspect of the invention the selector means is arranged in a vehide in such a way that the selector means can be operated by a driver of the vehicle while keeping the hands on the steering wheel of the vehicle.
The driving safety of the vehicle may increase if the driver of the vehicle may have the possibility to keep the hands on the steering wheel of the vehicle and at the same time operate selector means.
Arranging the selector means in the steering column of a vehicle may result in an increased space on the dashboard for components such as information screens, large displays that may require essential space to be able to be arranged on the dashboard.
According to a further aspect of the invention the control device comprises further functions selectable by means of the selector means in addition to the parking brake position and the trailer brake position.
Since several functions are selectable by means of the selector means, a further improvement of the driving performance and an increased use of the functions collected to the selector means can be expected.
According to a further aspect of the invention the selector means has a selectable position for operating a supplementary brake, such as a retarder brake.
A further improvement of the driving performance and thus also an increased use of the retarder function can be expected when the retarder function may be selected by the selector means.
According to a further aspect of the invention the selector means is connected to an electrical control circuit for controlling at least one of the brakes of the vehicle.
The electrical control circuit may comprise a control unit and/or a computer for controlling the brakes of the truck and/or on the trailer. The electrical control circuit may be connected to an electric, pneumatic and/or a hydraulic brake system.
