A method of producing a tool for grinding profiled sections, such strips made of wood, synthetic material or the like comprises coating a pattern of the profile to be ground with abrasive particles, rotating a grinding tool blank having at least the surface thereof of a material having an abrasive resistance less than that of the particles relative to and in contact with the particles to form a counter profile on the blank, and applying a coating of abrasive particles to the tool in the region of the counter profile. As described, a pattern 1, Fig. 3, is provided with a profile 2 on to which is sprayed a water-soluble adhesive 3. Abrasive particles 4 are sprinkled on to the adhesive and a rotating blank 5, Fig. 4, is moved radially towards and along the pattern so as to be formed with a profile counter to that of the pattern, the blank being of synthetic material such as foamed polystyrol. The profiled blank is coated with water-soluble adhesive 3a, Fig. 6, and abrasive particles 4a and is then used to grind a workpiece 1a to the same profile as the pattern 1. When the abrasive particles have become dull from use, they can be removed from the pattern and tool by dissolving the adhesive and the pattern and tool are then re-coated. When large amounts of material are to be removed. the grinding may be effected in steps using a number of tools having successively finer abrasive. Several tools may also be arranged around the periphery of the workpiece. The tools may be of the rotary or reciprocating type.
