Abstract

A superconductor alloy is provided by reacting a first metal namely niobium, tantalum, technetium or vanadium with a second metal namely tin, aluminium, silicon or gallium to form an alloy and heat treating the alloy in oxygen to form a particulate phase. As described, the process <PICT:1084517/C6-C7/1> is used to provide a superconductor wire comprising a plurality of strands 11 of the first metal in a matrix of the second metal the two metals being alloyed at their contact surfaces to form the superconducting alloy region 13. Up to 25% by weight of a solute metal such as zirconium having a larger atom diameter may be added to the first metal, and compounds specifically mentioned are V3Ga and Nb3Sr in a tin matrix. In the embodiment, strands of niobium are twisted together, dipped in molten tin, insulated with quartz glass or silica powder containing an oxygen supplying substance such as hydrated aluminium phosphate, wound into coil form and heat treated at 900 DEG to 950 DEG C. Alternatively or additionally, the individual strands may be coated with tin before twisting, if desired by electro-deposition as well as dipping. Alternatively, the heat treatment may be carried out in an oxygen atmosphere. The strands may be fluted to increase the size of the alloy region.
