A uranium rod is coated with Cu, Cr, Si or Zr, whilst rotating, by vapour deposition using a molybdenum crucible or a helical tungsten resistance heater. A second coating of another metal of the said group may be applied by vapour deposition or diffusion from powder or thin foil wound round the rod and heated.
