Abstract
1,177,229. Projectile fuzes. FORSVARETS FORSKNINGSINSTITUTT. 14 April, 1967 [29 April, 1966], No. 17210/67. Heading F3A. A shell fuze is armed after discharge and during trajection of the shell, at first mechanically and then electrically, when a shaft 5 is rotated by reduction gearing and a spline shaft journal, connected to a radial air turbine in the nose of the shell, the rotation of the shaft 5 causing a nut 16 to move along a coarse thread 14 against a spring 24 to withdraw a fork-shaped part of the nut 15a out of corresponding bores in a shutter 10 after a predetermined period. The shutter 10 is then rotated by a spring 20 through 180 degrees to align a relay charge 12 with an electric detonator 11 and a booster (13, Fig. 1, not shown). During the continued rotation of the shaft 5, a fine thread 6 on the shaft is disengaged from a corresponding thread in a stationary member 7 and the spring 24 urges the shaft 5 and nut 16 inwardly, whereby the shaft 5 is disengaged from the spline shaft journal and the shutter is locked in the armed position by the fork 15. Meanwhile a locking pin 28, Fig. 4, locking one end of a radial spring 26, which is in engagement at its other end with a contact pin 27 on the detonator 11, is forced by spring means into a bore in the shutter 10 when the shutter is in the armed position, and releases the spring 26 for temporary engagement against a stud 28a on the fork (15) as the nut 16 and shaft 5 are moved inwardly by the spring 24, the spring 26 is again released and engages a contact pin 29. An impulse from an electronic device receiving electrical energy from a generator driven by the turbine then initiates the explosive charge of the shell. The turbine and generator are protected during storage and transport of the shell by means of a rubber hood (31) over the nose of the shell.
