Abstract

The invention conprises a method of resolving a racemic mixture of a compound of formula <FORM:1066079/C2/1> wherein R1 is a C1- 4 alkyl group, R2 is a hydrogen atom, a C1- 6 alkyl or C2- 6 alkenyl or alkynyl group, a C1- 9 acyl group or an aryl or cycloalkyl group, and R3 is a hydrogen atom or a C1- 9 acyl group, by microbiological oxidation with a member of the Corynebacteriaceae family to obtain a d-17-keto-compound of formula <FORM:1066079/C2/2> The l-17-keto-isomer may also be isolated. Micro-organisms specified are Corynebacterium simplex (Arthrobacter simplex ATCC 6946), Corynebacterium hoagii and Corynebacterium equi. d - 13b - Ethyl - 17b - hydroxy - gon 4 - en - 3 -one is prepared by treatment of the corresponding 3-methoxy-gona-1,3,5(10)-triene with lithium and liquid ammonia, followed by acid hydrolysis.
