Abstract

Continuous filaments are fed in water to the screen of a paper-making machine at a speed greater than that of the screen so that they become entangled on the screen. The filaments may be of a polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, polyolefin, glass loaded with thermoplastic synthetic materials, or regenerated cellulose. The screen in the web forming zone may be inclined upwardly with suction boxes at different pressures on the inside of the screen and a breast box on the outside. In the box a feed duct is positioned with its end adjustably positioned adjacent the screen, the duct widening from a circular cross-section to a preferably adjustable, slot-shaped opening at the end. The opening is preferably largest in the middle. Water is fed at a speed greater than that of the wire through the duct, and draws and opens out the continuous filaments fed into the duct through a water-filled chamber adjustably positioned at the end of the circular-shaped portion of the duct. The filaments may be spun directly into the chamber. Water which may optionally contain staple fibres - for example thermoplastic bonding fibres - is fed directly into the breast box. There may be a plurality of feed ducts side-by-side, preferably slightly offset vertically and overlapping laterally, with the exit slots adjusted in the regions,of the overlap so that a web of even thickness is obtained. The filaments may be reciprocated across the screen. The web may be formed of a plurality of layers varying in thickness, and/or composition, and/or the traversing. A laminate may be formed composed of outer layers of continuous filaments and an inter layer of staple fibres. The web can be passed through a hot calender.
