Abstract
A refractory material comprising zirconia, zircon and alumina which is non-porous, homogeneous, free of cavities, acid-reducing elements, and impermeable to gas, is obtained by sintering a suitable mixture containing a catalyst at not above 1550 DEG C., the catalyst producing active films on the grains to minimize mullite formation and also making the vitreous phase sufficiently fluid at the sintering temperature whereby the excess vitreous phase is exuded from the product. The catalyst is cryolite, chiolite or the potassium analogue. Organic or inorganic binders and plasticizers e.g. clay, can be present.
