[Also in Division D1] Nitro dyes of the general formula wherein R is H, alkyl, e.g. C 1 -C 4 , or hydroxyalkyl and R<SP>1</SP> is hydroxyalkyl are used to dye hair. The dyes, of Examples 1 to 3, are prepared by condensing an appropriate monochloronitrobenzene with mono- or di-ethanolamine in presence of sodium carbonate and optionally cuprous chloride.
