Description

TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a miniature container and to a container assembly comprising a larger container intended to hold a first consumer product and Wherein the miniature container is intended to hold a second complementing consumer product.
BACKGROUND Smokeless oral tobacco products, such as snus (dry and wet) or snuff, are increasingly popular by Consumers. They are used in the oral cavity in direct contact With the oral mucosa. Although it is generally considered that smokeless oral tobacco products are less harmful to the Consumers than cigarettes, they still may have a negative effect, in particular on the dental and oral health.
A number of oral care composition have been introduced With the aim of mitigating the negative effects of smokeless oral tobacco products. EP 2405942B1 discloses an oral delivery product in the form of an oral pouch. discloses oral smokeless tobacco products and oral smokeless non-tobacco snuff products comprising carbamide or carbamide salts.
US 9,554,986 B2 discloses an oral care composition, comprising one or more functional agents selected from a group consisting of a Whitening agent, a re- mineralizing agent, an anti-plaque agent, an anti-gingivitis agent, a detoxifying agent and its combinations. The composition further comprises a probiotic blend consisting of beneficial oral bacterial population and at least one essential oil comprising antimicrobial activity. discloses an oral pouched composition and product for oral and dental care Which is tobacco and nicotine-free. The oral pouched product comprises a tooth re-mineralizing agent. The idea is that the consumer should once in a While take a break from the smokeless oral tobacco product and instead use the pouched oral care product. Today, smokeless oral tobacco products, in particular “snus”, are packaged and delivered to the consumers in a very traditional and almost standardized Way - typically in characteristic flat cylindrical containers. Also, the distribution system and display systems utilized in shops are built and optimized for these characteristic cylindrical containers. It is believed that in order to become accepted the oral care products should preferably be incorporated in the existing distribution and display systems. At the same time, the consumer may not Want to carry around more than one full size “snus container”.
Although effective oral care products are available, there is still a need to provide these to the consumers of smokeless oral tobacco products in a manner that is convenient and Which is compatible With the existing distribution and display systems.
SUMMARY The object of the present invention is to overcome the drawbacks associated With prior art containers. This is achieved by the miniature container and the container assembly defined by the independent claim.
According to one aspect of the invention a miniature cylindrical container is provided. The miniature cylindrical container comprises a base and a lid, Wherein the lid is arranged to slidably close the base. The base is forrned as a flat cylinder open in the upper end, the open end of the base provided With an upstanding rim forrning a half circle on the open end of the base, the upstanding rim on its inner side provided With a circumferential groove and the groove positioned so that the lower part of the groove is flushed With the upper end surface of the base Which is not covered by the upstanding rim. The groove is arranged to receive a portion of the lid. The lid has a first portion forrning a half circle With a first diameter, d, and With a thickness smaller than the height of the groove, and the lid is provided With a guiding tip positioned on the midpoint of the half circle With the first diameter. The upstanding rim of the base is provided With a guiding recess positioned in the groove and at the midpoint of the half circle formed by the upstanding rim and the guiding recess arranged to receive the guiding tip in a closing operation and to accommodate the guiding tip then the lid is in a closed position.
According to one embodiment the lid comprises a second portion forrning a half circle With a second diameter, D, the second diameter D, being larger than the diameter of the first portion, the first diameter, d, of the lid.
According to one embodiment the second portion of the lid comprises a skirt extending towards the base and partially enclosing the base. The skirt of the lid may extend to the bottom of the base.
According to one embodiment the miniature cylindrical container is provided With a locking arrangement arranged to secure the lid in a closed position, the locking arrangement comprising a protrusion provided on either the base or the lid and a matching recess provided respectively on the lid or the base. The locking arrangement may be of snap-f1t type and comprise a first protrusion/recess pair provided close to one end of the half circle formed by the skirt of the lid and a second protrusion/recess pair provided close to the other end of the half circle formed by the skirt of the lid. The skirt may preferably have an outWard flexibility providing for the first and second protrusion being moveable from their respective resting positions in the first and second recess.
According to one embodiment the locking arrangement is of snap-f1t type and comprises a protrusion/recess pair provided on the guiding tip and in the guiding recess.
According to one aspect of the invention a container assembly is provided. The container assembly comprises a main container With a main compartment and provided With a main container cover Which covers the main compartment and closes the main container. The main container cover comprises a secondary compartment accessible from the upper surface of the main container cover and separated from the main compartment. The container assembly further comprises a miniature cylindrical container completely contained in the secondary compartment of the main container cover.
According to embodiments of the invention the miniature cylindrical container comprises one or more of the features described above.
Thanks to the invention a miniature cylindrical container is provided that has the required small dimensions, yet is easily to operate, for example With one hand.
One advantage afforded by the present invention is that a main product and a complementing product may be provided to the end customer in one familiar package. The package compliant With establish means for distribution and displaying. The main product may be a pouched oral tobacco product and the complementing product a pouched oral care composition. Thereby a consumer Will have the oral care product ready at hand While consuming the tobacco product and “break” the use of the tobacco product With the oral care product.

The container assembly 100 according to the invention is schematically illustrated in Figures la-c, wherein a) is an elevated perspective view, b) a partly exploded elevated perspective view and c) a cross-sectional side view. The container assembly l00 according to the invention comprises a main container ll0 with a main container cover 120. The main container ll0 is provided with a main compartment lll arranged to accommodate a consumable product, for example pouched oral tobacco products. Provided in the main container cover 120 is a secondary compartment l2l accessible from the upper surface of the main container cover 120. The secondary compartment l2l is typically cylindrical and covered with an inner cover l20:2. The inner cover l20:2 may have a radius that is smaller than the radius of the main container cover l20 so that the surface from above comprises an inner portion that is the inner cover l20:l and a surrounding portion l20:l of the main container cover l20. The main container ll0 is typically of a type commonly used for smokeless oral tobacco products, wherein the secondary compartment l2l is used for storing used pouched smokeless tobacco products. Such main containers with a built in “waste compartment” are highly appreciated by the consumers. The container assembly l00 according to the invention further comprises a miniature cylindrical container 200 completely contained in the secondary compartment 22l of the main container cover l20 as illustrated in Figure lb wherein the inner cover l20:2 has been removed and in the cross-sectional view of Figure lc. In order to be completely contained in the secondary compartment 22l of the main container 2l0 the miniature cylindrical container 200 needs to have dimensions suitable to the provided space. Typical and preferred dimensions of the miniature cylindrical container 200 is a height of 5-7mm and a diameter of 45 - 65mm.
The intention with the container assembly l00 according to the invention is to distribute a main product and a complementing product in one unit, for example a pouched smokeless oral tobacco and a pouched oral care product in one unit; The main product, the pouched smokeless oral tobacco is provided in the main container l 10 and the complementing product, the pouched oral care product is provided in the miniature cylindrical container 200, which in tum is 6 accommodated in the secondary compartment 121 of the main container cover 120. Thereby the consumer is provided with one product unit and that product unit can be distributed in the established way. Starting to use the product unit, the consumer may remove the miniature cylindrical container 200 from the secondary compartment 121 and store it separately in order to use the secondary compartment 121 for waste, typically the used pouched tobacco.
The available space in the secondary compartment 121 as well as the use of the miniature cylindrical container 200 put high demands on its design and functionality. The miniature cylindrical container 200 needs to be small but should still be easy to handle, preferably by one hand, and also have a smooth outer surface.
The miniature cylindrical container 200 according to the invention comprises a base 210 and a lid 220 and is schematically illustrated in Figures 2a-j, wherein a) is a top view of the miniature cylindrical container 200, b) is a top view of the miniature cylindrical container 200 partly open, c) is a top view of the lid 220, d) is a top view of the base 210, e) is a side view of the closed miniature cylindrical container 200, f) is a side view of the miniature cylindrical container 200 partly open, g) is a side view of the lid 220, h) is a side view of the base 210, i) is an elevated perspective view of the closed miniature cylindrical container 200 and j) is an elevated perspective view of the miniature cylindrical container 200 partly open. The lid 220 of the miniature cylindrical container 200 is arranged to slidably close the base 210. The base 210 is preferably formed as a flat cylinder which is open in the upper end. The opening may extend over the complete interior of the base, as depicted. Altematively, the opening may have a diameter that is smaller than the intemal diameter of the base 210. The open end of the base 210 is provided with a semi-circumferential upstanding rim 211 forrning a half circle on the open end of the base 210. The upstanding rim 211 is on its inner side provided with a circumferential groove 212, positioned so that the lower part of the groove 212 is flushed with the upper end surface of the base 210 which is not covered by the upstanding rim 211. The groove 212 is arranged to receive a portion of the lid 220, and the groove 212 is dimensioned so as to correspond to the thickness of the lid 220 with a suitable play. The lid 220 has a first portion 222 forrning a half circle with a first diameter, d, and with a thickness smaller than the height of the groove 212. In a closing operation, the lid 220 is first supported by the part of the base 210 not provided with the rim 211 and then guided by the groove 212, thereby the operation of the miniature cylindrical container 200 is well controlled.
According to one embodiment of the invention the lid is provided With a guiding tip 221 positioned on the midpoint of the half circle With the first diameter. The upstanding rim 211 of the base 210 is provided With a matching guiding recess 213 positioned in the groove 212 and at the midpoint of the half circle forrned by the upstanding rim 211. The guiding recess 213 is arranged to receive the guiding tip 221 in a closing operation and to accommodate the guiding tip 221 then the lid 220 is in a closed position. The closing operation can hence be seen as having three phases, a first Wherein the lid 220 is supported by the part of the base 210 not provided With the rim 211, a second Wherein the lid 220 is guided by the groove 212, and a third Wherein the final positioning of the lid 220 is controlled by guiding tip 221 interacting With the guiding recess 213. The guiding tip 221 may have a rectangular shape With rounded corners as depicted, altematively the guiding tip 221 may have a triangular shape or forrning part of a circle or an oval.
According to one embodiment the lid 220 is an essentially flat and circular. According to one embodiment the lid 220 comprises a second portion 224 forrning a half circle With a second diameter, D, the second diameter D, being larger than the diameter, d, of the first portion 222. The second portion 224 of the lid 220 may comprises a skirt 223 extending towards the base 210 and partially enclosing the base 210 in the closed position. The skirt 223 of the lid 220 extend all the Way to the bottom of the base 210 so that in the closed position the side surface of the miniature cylindrical container 200 is smooth. Further, the base 210 may for the portion comprising the rim 211 have a diameter Which is equal to the second diameter, D, of the lid 220, so that in a close position the skirt 223 is flushed With curved surface of the base 210.
According to one embodiment the base 210 and lid 220 of the miniature cylindrical container 200 is provided With a snap fit lock to ensure that the lid 220 does not accidently slide open. According to one embodiment, schematically illustrated in Figures 3a-b, Wherein a) is a cross- sectional view of the miniature cylindrical container 200 in a closed position and b) is an elevated perspective view of the base 210, the skirt 223 of the lid 220 and the base 210 are provided With a snap fit arrangement 228 arranged to secure the lid 220 in a closed position. The snap fit arrangement 228 utilizes an outWard flexibility provided by the skirt 223 of the lid 220. The snap fit arrangement 228 may be realized by a first protrusion/recess pair 228 provided close to one end of the half circle forrned by the skirt 223 of the lid 220 and a second protrusion/recess pair 228 provided close to the other end of the half circle forrned by the skirt 223 of the lid 220. The protrusion 228:1 may be provided on the base 210 and the matching recess 228:2 on the lid 220 or vice versa. The protrusions and recesses are preferably 8 dimensioned and positioned so that in the closed position the first protrusion is accommodated in the first recess and the second protrusion rests is accommodated in the second recess.
An alternative embodiment of a snap-f1t arrangement is schematically illustrated in Figures 4a-b, Wherein a) is a side view of the lid 220 With an enlarged portion showing the guiding tip 221 and b) is cross-sectional view of the miniature cylindrical container 200 in a closed position. According to the embodiment the guiding tip 221 and guiding recess 213 is provided With a locking arrangement 231 of snap-f1t type. The guiding tip 221 may be provided With a protrusion 231:1 extending either upwards or doWnWards and the guiding recess 213 of the base 210 provided With a matching recess 23132 arranged to receive the protrusion 231 then the miniature cylindrical container 200 is in the closed position. Altematively, the base 210 is provided With a protrusion and the lid 220 With a matching recess. The flexibility of the lid 220 and in particular of the guiding tip 221, is utilized in providing the snap-f1t function. In addition, the groove 212 may be arranged to have a play With regards to the part of the lid 220 that is received by the groove in order to allow a slight upwards/doWnWards movement of the lid 220. The play of the grove 212 may be conf1ned to only a portion of the groove 212 encompassing the guiding recess 213. Altematively, the guiding recess 213 is provided With a play sufficient for the guiding tip 221 to flex upwards/doWnWards.
The lid 220 may on its upper surface be provided With a high friction section 240 to increase the friction to a finger of the user and thereby ease the sliding operation. The high friction section 240 may be ribbed, grooved or surface treated by other means to increase the friction. In the same manner the base 210 may on its outer bottom surface be provided With a similar high friction section.
The embodiments described above are to be understood as illustrative examples of the present invention. It Will be understood that those skilled in the art that various modifications, combinations and changes may be made to the embodiments. In particular, different part solutions in the different embodiments can be combined in other configurations, Where technically possible.
