METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR WARNING FOR VULNERABLE ROAD USERS IN CONNECTION TO A NON-MOVING VEHICLE
TECHNICAL FIELD
The invention relates to a method for warning for vulnerable road users in
connection to a non-moving vehicle according to the preamble of claim 1. The invention relates to a system for warning for vulnerable road users in connection to a non-moving vehicle. The invention also relates to a vehicle. The invention in addition relates to a computer program and a computer
program product.
BACKGROUND ART
A lot of accidents occur when pedestrians walk in front of a vehicle, e.g. a bus, intending to cross the road as it is difficult for the driver of an approaching vehicle to see the person.
In order to prevent such accidents some buses are equipped with warning
systems.
US20110163868 discloses a warning system mounted on a bus comprising detecting means for detecting an object such as a person, and signalling means connected to the detection mean, said detection means being arrange
to remotely detect an object in the vicinity of the vehicle.
The detection means in US20110163868 is connected to signalling means to automatically emit a signal that is detectable from a side of the vehicle so as to warn an oncoming vehicle.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide a method for warning for vulnerable road users in connection to a non-moving vehicle which further reduces risk for accident involving the vulnerable road user.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a system for which for warning for vulnerable road users in connection to a non-moving vehicle which further reduces risk for accident involving the vulnerable road user.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
These and other objects, apparent from the following description, are
achieved by a method, a system, a vehicle, a computer program and a computer program product, which are of the type stated by way of introduction and which in addition exhibits the features recited in the characterising clause of the appended independent claims. Preferred embodiments of the method and the system are defined in appended
dependent claims.
Specifically an object of the invention is achieved by a method for warning for vulnerable road users in connection to a non-moving vehicle comprising the steps of detecting a vulnerable road user object in connection to a vehicle; detecting another vehicle approaching said non-moving vehicle; and
activating a warning of the existence of the detected object, said warning
being directed to said approaching vehicle. The step of activating a warning directed to said approaching vehicle comprises the steps of: establishing contact with the approaching vehicle within a vehicle-to-vehicle communication arrangement; and communicating information about said
object to said approaching vehicle. Hereby the risk for accident involving the
vulnerable road user such as a pedestrian is reduced in that the approaching vehicle communicates with the non-moving vehicle and can take measures in order to avoid an accident.
According to an embodiment of the method the step of activating a warning of the existence of the detected vulnerable road user object comprises the step of generating a projection on the ground by illumination. Hereby the vulnerable road user and/or the driver of the approaching vehicle will be
informed in an efficient way about the approaching vehicle further reducing
the risk of an accident.
According to an embodiment of the method the warning comprising the step of generating a projection on the ground by illumination directed to the vulnerable road user object and/or the approaching vehicle. Hereby the
vulnerable road user and/or the driver of the approaching vehicle will be
informed in an efficient way about the approaching vehicle further reducing the risk of an accident.
According to an embodiment of the method the step of detecting said object comprises the step of detecting direction of movement of the object relative
to the non-moving vehicle. By having information about the direction of
movement of the object, i.e. the vulnerable road user object, unnecessary activation of warning can be avoided. Thus according to a variant a warning is only activated if the object is moving in the direction towards the road on which the approaching vehicle is travelling or if the object is standing still and
not if the object is moving in another direction away from the danger.
According to an embodiment of the method the step of activating said warning directed to the approaching vehicle and/or the vulnerable road user object is effected depending on the direction of the movement of the object. Hereby unnecessary activation of warning can be avoided. Thus according to
a variant a warning is only activated if the object is moving in the direction
towards the road on which the approaching vehicle is travelling or if the object is standing still and not if the object is moving in another direction away from the danger.
According to an embodiment of the method the step of detecting said object comprises the step of determining the position of said object relative to said non-moving vehicle; and wherein the step of communicating information about said object to said approaching vehicle comprises the step of
communicating information about said position. Hereby the approaching
vehicle will have information of not only the risk of the object but also the location of the object and thus the risk of an accident may be further reduced, thus improving safety.
According to an embodiment the method comprises the steps of: determining
whether the vulnerable road user object and/or the approaching vehicle has perceived the warning by means of the generated projection on the ground; and, if not, escalating the warning. Hereby the risk of accident will be further reduced.
Specifically an object of the invention is achieved by a system for warning for
vulnerable road users in connection to a non-moving vehicle according to
independent claim 8.
The system further comprises the embodiments according to claims 9-14.
The system according to the invention has the advantages according to the corresponding method claims.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Hereinafter the term "link" refers to a communication link which may be a
physical connector, such as an optoelectronic communication wire, or a nonphysical connector such as a wireless connection, for example a radio or microwave link.
Hereinafter the term "vulnerable road user object" refers to any object that
may be in connection to a non-moving vehicle and may cause an accident with an approaching vehicle such as a pedestrian, an animal such as a dog, a person in a wheel chair, a baby carriage, or the like. The term "vulnerable road user object" also refers to a vulnerable road user. The term "vulnerable road user" also refers to a vulnerable road user object.
Hereinafter the term "vehicle-to-vehicle communication arrangement" refers
to any wireless communication arrangement between a non-moving vehicle and a vehicle approaching the non-moving vehicle such as for example a radio or microwave link, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or the like.
Fig. 1 schematically illustrates a scenario involving a vehicle 1 for passenger
transport along a predetermined route R. The vehicle 1 is constituted by a
bus. The vehicle 1, i.e. the bus, is here a non-moving vehicle 1 in that it has stopped at a bus stop S for allowing passengers to enter and leave the bus.
The route R comprises a pedestrian crossing C in front of the non-moving vehicle 1.
The scenario further involves another vehicle 2 approaching the non-moving vehicle 1. A vulnerable road user object 4, here a person 4, is located in
connection to the front of the non-moving vehicle 1, not visible to the driver of
the oncoming vehicle 2. There is thus a risk that the person 4 in front of the non-moving vehicle may move in a direction towards the road R such that there is a risk that the approaching vehicle 2 will run over the person 4.
In order to avoid this the non-moving vehicle 1 comprises means 110 for
detecting the vulnerable road user object 4 in connection to the non-moving
vehicle 1 and means for detecting the approaching vehicle.
The non-moving vehicle 1 further comprises means 130 for warning the approaching vehicle 2 of the vulnerable road user object 4, the warning means 130 comprising means for establishing contact with the approaching
vehicle 2 within a vehicle-to-vehicle communication arrangement, and means
