Abstract

Provided is a catalyst precursor for production of ,-unsaturated carboxylic acid to enable production of ,-unsaturated carboxylic acid at a high yield. A method for producing a catalyst precursor for production of ,-unsaturated carboxylic acid, wherein the catalyst precursor is a precursor of a catalyst for use in production of ,-unsaturated carboxylic acid through gas-phase catalytic oxidation of ,-unsaturated aldehyde with molecular oxygen, the precursor contains an ammonium species, and the method includes: (i) a step of providing an aqueous slurry or aqueous solution (I) containing molybdenum-containing heteropolyacid; (ii) a step of adding an ammonium compound to the aqueous slurry or aqueous solution (I) to obtain a slurry (II) including a precipitated ammonium salt of heteropolyacid; and (iii) a step of drying the slurry (II) including the precipitated ammonium salt of heteropolyacid to obtain the precursor, wherein the ammonium compound used in the step (ii) is an am
