Abstract
Description
The invention relates to hydrometallurgy of heavy non-ferrous metals and can be used to obtain metals from their salts and, in particular, cobalt by hydrogen reduction of its salts.
Cobalt metal is widely used in various fields of technology. A significant part of cobalt in industry is obtained from its chloride solutions by electrolysis. During the electrolytic deposition of cobalt, it is purified from a number of impurities. To obtain pure and very pure cobalt, the initial solutions should not contain impurities that are discharged at the cathode together with cobalt and pollute it. Such impurities can be lead, antimony, bismuth, and a number of other elements. At the same time, many of these elements or their compounds have increased volatility and therefore, during high-temperature reduction of cobalt oxide, for example coal, they are capable of sublimation. It is possible to obtain more pure metallic cobalt by high-temperature reduction of cobalt from its salts using hydrogen gas.
A known method for producing metallic cobalt (see Furman A.A. Inorganic chlorides. M .: Chemistry, 1980. P. 406), according to which highly heated cobalt chloride is reduced with moist hydrogen to produce metallic cobalt.
The disadvantage of this method is that its implementation requires strong heating of the chloride, in which it can melt or boil. The use of wet hydrogen complicates the process and leads to the production of wet vapors of hydrogen chloride, which are more aggressive than dry hydrogen chloride. The disadvantages of the method should also include the fact that it does not provide for the capture of gaseous hydrogen chloride.
A known method of producing metallic cobalt (see US Pat. RF 2370558, IPC C22B 23/02, 5/12, 9/22 (2006.01), 2009), according to which the cobalt chloride powder is placed in a reactor, heated to a temperature of 700-750 ° C dried hydrogen is passed through the reactor and the obtained cobalt metal powder is subjected to incomplete chlorination at a temperature of 600-650 ° C with the formation of mainly volatile impurity chlorides. The purified metal is pressed into a bar and placed in a vacuum melting chamber, where it is subjected to zone recrystallization in vacuum.
The disadvantages of the method include the fact that cobalt chloride is heated to 750 ° C, although it is known that the melting point of cobalt chloride CoCl 2 is 724 ° C. Therefore, at temperatures of 700-750 ° C, partial or complete melting of the salt is possible, which leads to difficulties in the diffusion of hydrogen into the melt due to the formation of a metal film on the surface. As a result, the recovery time of chloride is significantly increased. The heating of cobalt chloride to a temperature of 750 ° C leads, in addition, to an increased volatilization of CoCl 2 , since the vapor pressure increases approximately two times with increasing temperature from 700 to 750 ° C. The disadvantages of the method include the fact that the gaseous hydrogen chloride released during the reduction is not captured. This leads to the loss of chlorine-containing reagent and pollution of the atmosphere of the working area with aggressive gas. Refining of metallic cobalt by treatment with gaseous chlorine makes the method highly hazardous and complicates its practical application. Carrying out vacuum remelting of cobalt further complicates the method.
Also known is a prototype method for producing metallic cobalt (see US Pat. RF 2434955, IPC C22B 23/02, 5/12, 9/22 (2006.01), 2011) according to which cobalt chloride powder is placed in a reactor and sublimation is carried out at while passing a stream of wet argon at a rate of 100 ml / min. The temperature in the sublimation zone is maintained within the range of 940-960 ° C at a speed of movement of the sublimation zone of 50 mm / h and the duration of sublimation is 10 hours. Under these conditions, high-temperature hydrolysis of readily hydrolyzable chloride impurities, such as NiCl 2 , FeCl 2 , FeCl 3 , CuCl 2 , etc. takes place. After 10 passes, the initial and middle parts of the ingot, as the purest ones, are separated by a sublimation zone and subjected to heterogeneous reduction with hydrogen at a temperature of 750-780 ° C for 1 hour to obtain cobalt metal in the form of a powder and a sponge. The obtained metal cobalt is pressed into a bar, which is subjected to electronic vacuum recrystallization to obtain crystals of high-purity cobalt.
The disadvantage of this method is the low yield of metallic cobalt from its chloride, since only a portion of the initial cobalt chloride is brought to the metallic state (initial and middle parts of the ingot, i.e., about 75%). The disadvantages of the method should also include its duration (more than 100 hours) and significant energy consumption for heating the material, accompanied by losses of cobalt. The sublimation of cobalt chloride in a stream of wet argon leads to the hydrolysis of not only impurity elements, but also a significant part of cobalt chloride, which has similar chemical properties with iron and nickel chlorides. Hydrogen chloride formed during hydrogen reduction is not captured. This leads to the loss of chlorine-containing reagent and pollution of the atmosphere of the working area. Carrying out vacuum remelting of cobalt further complicates the method.
The present invention is aimed at achieving a technical result, which consists in increasing the yield of cobalt metal from its chloride, reducing the duration and energy intensity of the method, as well as in obtaining additional technical products.
The technical result is achieved by the fact that in the method for producing metallic cobalt, including high-temperature treatment of cobalt chloride in an inert gas stream with purification from impurities and hydrogen reduction of purified cobalt chloride at elevated temperature with the release of hydrogen chloride and the formation of metallic cobalt, according to the invention, high-temperature processing of cobalt chloride is carried out at a temperature of 600-700 ° C in a stream of dry inert gas, hydrogen reduction of purified cobalt chloride at a temperature of 600-720 ° C, and the resulting hydrogen chloride is sent to capture.
The achievement of the result is also facilitated by the use of cobalt chloride containing not more than 4 molecules of crystallization water.
The achievement of the result also contributes to the fact that the high-temperature treatment of cobalt chloride is carried out for 1-4 hours.
The achievement of the result is also facilitated by the use of nitrogen or argon as an inert gas.
The achievement of the result is directed to the fact that hydrogen chloride is trapped in water to obtain a hydrochloric acid solution.
To achieve the result, it is also directed that hydrogen chloride is captured in an aqueous suspension containing cobalt hydroxide to obtain a solution of cobalt chloride.
The essential features of the claimed invention, which determine the scope of legal protection and are sufficient to obtain the above technical result, perform functions and relate to the result as follows.
Carrying out high-temperature treatment of cobalt chloride in a stream of dry inert gas at a temperature of 600-700 ° C provides a deep removal of residual water from it, as well as a number of impurities that form volatile chlorides, which makes it possible to obtain purer cobalt and less aggressive hydrogen chloride. Carrying out high-temperature treatment of cobalt chloride at temperatures above 700 ° C leads to molten salt and loss of cobalt due to the beginning of sublimation of salt, as well as to additional energy consumption. Lowering the treatment temperature below 600 ° C does not provide a significant purification of cobalt chloride from volatile impurities and requires additional heating of the salt before its hydrogen reduction.
Carrying out the hydrogen reduction of purified cobalt chloride at a temperature of 600-720 ° C provides a fairly quick recovery of cobalt chloride to obtain metallic cobalt and dry hydrogen chloride at the lowest possible temperature. Carrying out the recovery process at temperatures below 600 ° C slows the recovery of cobalt chloride or leads to incomplete recovery. The recovery of cobalt dichloride at temperatures above 720 ° C leads to an increase in energy consumption without a significant reduction in the duration of the method. In addition, partial or complete melting of the salt is possible, which leads to difficulties in the diffusion of hydrogen into the melt due to the formation of a metal film on the surface. As a result, the duration of cobalt chloride recovery is significantly increased.
The direction of the resulting hydrogen chloride to capture prevents the entry of toxic hydrogen chloride into the atmosphere of the working area and, in addition, ensures the production of chlorine-containing products in the form of hydrochloric acid or a solution of cobalt chloride.
The combination of the above features is necessary and sufficient to achieve the technical result of the invention, which consists in increasing the yield of cobalt metal from its chloride, reducing the duration and energy intensity of the method, as well as in obtaining additional technical products.
In particular cases of carrying out the invention, the following specific operations and operating parameters are preferred.
The use of cobalt chloride containing not more than 4 molecules of crystallization water is due to the fact that when the powder of such cobalt chloride is heated, it does not melt. Otherwise, monolithic cobalt chloride is formed, the recovery of which is difficult.
Conducting high-temperature treatment of cobalt chloride in an inert gas stream for 1-4 hours allows you to completely remove crystallization water from cobalt chloride, as well as partially or completely - volatile impurities that can be reduced together with cobalt chloride or earlier, thereby polluting the resulting metallic cobalt.
The use of nitrogen as an inert gas allows the purification of cobalt chloride from volatile impurities, comparable with argon, while reducing the cost of reagents.
The capture of hydrogen chloride with water provides an additional product in the form of hydrochloric acid.
The capture of hydrogen chloride in an aqueous suspension containing cobalt hydroxide provides an additional product in the form of a concentrated chloride solution suitable for the subsequent production of pure cobalt chloride by known methods.
The above particular features of the invention make it possible to carry out the method in an optimal mode while ensuring minimal cobalt losses, reducing the duration and energy intensity of the method with obtaining additional technical products.
In the General case, the production of cobalt metal from its chloride is as follows. Cobalt chloride is poured into the receiver in the form of a boat, which is placed in a sealed oven. After the furnace is heated to 100 ° C, a dry inert gas, nitrogen or argon, is supplied and heating is continued to 600-700 ° C. After removal of volatile impurities in the form of Pb, Bi, Ag and Sb chlorides, dry hydrogen is introduced into the system for 1-4 hours, maintaining the process temperature in the range of 600-720 ° C. The resulting sponge of metallic cobalt is cooled to room temperature in a stream of nitrogen or argon.
The recovery of cobalt chloride is carried out until the end of the evolution of hydrogen chloride, which is fixed with moistened litmus paper. To determine the degree of recovery of cobalt chloride, the sponge of metallic cobalt is treated with water and the content of dissolved cobalt is determined. Given its amount, the degree of conversion of cobalt chloride to cobalt metal is determined. Hydrogen chloride released during the reduction of cobalt chloride by the reaction: CoCl 2 + H 2 = Co + 2HCl, is sent to capture. The capture of hydrogen chloride is carried out by passing it through a solution of water, cooled to a temperature of 5-10 ° C, to obtain 18-36% hydrochloric acid, or passed through an aqueous suspension containing cobalt hydroxide. The content of volatile impurities in the obtained metallic cobalt is evaluated after it is dissolved in highly pure nitric acid by mass spectrometry.
The essence and advantages of the claimed method can be illustrated by the following Examples.

Example 2. After heating the furnace to 100 ° C, dry argon is passed through it and the temperature in the reaction zone is increased to 700 ° C. After cobalt chloride is held at this temperature for 1 hour, dry hydrogen is fed into the system, raising the temperature to 720 ° C. Recovery is carried out within 0.8 hours. The result is 45.39 g of cobalt. The yield of cobalt metal from its chloride was 99.9% with a volatile content of 0.002 wt.%. The hydrogen chloride released during the reduction of cobalt chloride is sent to a cooled absorber tank filled with water.
