Abstract
Description
The invention relates to technologies for the direct production of carbon and carbon-containing nanoscale tubes from the starting carbon-containing substance.
There are various methods for the production of carbon nanotubes, namely, electric arc discharge, laser ablation, thermal methods of chemical deposition, plasma methods of chemical deposition, and others.
Carbon nanotubes are produced by electric arc discharge by applying voltage to a pair of carbon electrodes. Nanotubes are formed in the form of graphite sheets, where carbon atoms are regularly ordered into a hexagonal shape, twisted into cylinders. A cylinder of a single graphite sheet is a single-walled nanotube — it has a diameter of one to several nanometers. A cylinder of several graphite sheets arranged concentrically is a multi-walled nanotube — it has a diameter size from several nanometers to tens of nanometers. Single-walled carbon tubes are mainly produced by an arc discharge using carbon electrodes also containing a metal catalyst, or an anode into which a metal catalyst is inserted. Mentioned carbon material refers to amorphous, or graphite conductive materials, mainly containing carbon.
Известен способ получения углеродных нанотрубок, в соответствии с которым в газонепроницаемой реакционной камере располагают напротив друг друга углеродные анод и катод и нагревают их окружающим нагревателем до возникновения между ними дугового разряда с целью повышения чистоты получаемого целевого продукта [Заявка Японии №2000-203820].There is a method of producing carbon nanotubes, according to which a carbon anode and cathode are placed opposite each other in a gas-tight reaction chamber and heated by a surrounding heater until an arc discharge arises between them in order to improve the purity of the resulting target product [Japanese Application No. 2000-203820].
There is also known a method for the simultaneous production of single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes synthesized in an arc discharge, in which an inert gas or gas mixture containing an inert gas is directed at a sufficiently high speed to the cathode, which is a carbon material inside a hollow electrode used as an anode, and at the same time generate an electric arc to form an arc discharge path along the flow of said gas, while moving the electrodes relative to each other so that the cathode spot of the electric arc moved along the cathode

This method is the closest analogue of the proposed method and adopted as a prototype of the invention. Its disadvantages include: significant contamination of nanotube powder with electrode material and low productivity.
The invention solves the problem of creating a high-performance method for producing carbon nanotubes, which allows to obtain high-purity nanotubes, and nanotube powder - without inclusions of foreign materials.
The problem is solved in that a method for producing carbon nanotubes is proposed, which includes heating to an evaporation temperature, vaporizing and decomposing a carbon-containing material in an inert gas stream, and extracting the nanotubes from the inert gas stream while cooling it, and a metal is placed in a container of carbon-containing material, and heating to the temperature of evaporation, evaporation and decomposition of the carbon-containing material is carried out by acting on the named metal with an electron beam having an energy of 0, 4-3 MeV, in such a way as to cause at least melting of said metal, wherein said electron beam is generated by an electron accelerator.
The best result can be obtained if the electron beam has a power of not more than 500 kW.
To simplify the technical implementation of the process, it is advisable to melt the metal at a pressure close to atmospheric.
As a rule, the inert gas flow rate is 0.5-25000 l / min.
The inert gas may be argon, or helium, or neon, or krypton, or xenon, or a mixture thereof.
The container of carbon-containing material can be made in the form of a graphite crucible.
The metal placed in the container and acting as a catalyst, i.e., promoting the growth of carbon-containing nanotubes, can be tungsten, or iron, or nickel, or cobalt, or molybdenum, or yttrium, or platinum, or iridium, or vanadium, or copper, or titanium or zirconium, or tantalum, or silicon, or germanium, or niobium, or aluminum, or chromium, or combinations thereof.
The inert gas stream may further comprise carbon-containing gas and / or vapors of carbon-containing liquids.
Углеродсодержащим газом и/или парами углеродсодержащих жидкостей может быть углекислый газ, или окись углерода, или предельный углеводород общей формулы CnH2n+2, где n=1-10, или непредельный углеродсодержащий газ, например ацетилен, пропилен, или пары спиртов, например CnH2n+1OH, где n=1-4.The carbon-containing gas and / or vapor of carbon-containing liquids may be carbon dioxide, or carbon monoxide, or a saturated hydrocarbon of the general formula C n H 2n + 2 , where n = 1-10, or unsaturated carbon-containing gas, for example acetylene, propylene, or vapors of alcohols, for example, C n H 2n + 1 OH, where n = 1-4.
The resulting nanotubes may be carbon.
The resulting nanotubes may consist of metal carbides.
The resulting nanotubes can be either single-walled or multi-walled.
Figure 1 shows a photograph of single-walled carbon tubes.
Figure 2 shows a photograph of carbon-containing silicon carbide tubes.
Figure 3 shows a photograph of multi-walled carbon tubes.
The proposed method is as follows.
Solid source material - metal in the form of a monolith or large ingots, is placed in a carbon-containing container made, for example, of graphite and then into the evaporation chamber and a focused electron beam with an energy of 0.4-3 MeV and a power of not more than 500 kW is sent to its surface , the values of which depend on the boiling point of the metal placed in the tank. A focused electron beam that is directed at the metal generates an electron accelerator. As a result of the action of electrons, all the metal melts, interacting with the walls of the carbon-containing container, and then heats up to a temperature at which a part of the metal of the surface to be treated and carbon from the walls of the container turn into a vapor state. Simultaneously with the action of an electron beam on the metal surface, an inert gas is supplied to the evaporation chamber, maintaining the pressure in the evaporation chamber close to atmospheric pressure. The inert gas flow has a flow rate in the range of 0.5-25000 l / min and depends on the melting temperature of the metal and the power of the electron beam. The inert gas stream captures the metal and carbon vapors and carries them away from the evaporation zone. Since the temperature of the inert gas is lower than the temperature at the melting point of the metal, the metal powder is already released in the inert gas stream and rapidly solidifies. The carbon present in the vapor forms carbon nanotubes, the catalyst for the formation of which are metal nanoparticles. Then the gas stream can be directed from the evaporation chamber either to the cooling chamber, or directly to the storage hopper.
This method allows one to obtain powders from nanotubes on an industrial scale due to the high productivity of the process with the action of an electron beam on the metal and, in addition, the powders are of high purity, since the electron beam does not introduce any impurities into the process.
Example 1. In a graphite crucible located in the evaporation chamber, tungsten is placed, which when purged with an inert gas - argon with a flow rate of 20 liters per minute at a pressure close to atmospheric, is melted by an electron beam at a power of 50 kW and heated up to the evaporation temperature of tungsten ( approximately 5900 ° C). In the contact zone with the molten metal, carbon evaporates (evaporation temperature 3400 ° С) and single-walled carbon nanotubes several nanometers in diameter are formed in the flow on cooling nanoparticles of the catalyst - tungsten in Fig. 1, obtained by transmission electron microscopy.
Example 2. The same as in example 1, only to increase the amount of carbon interacting with the catalyst, and, ultimately, the output of nanotubes into the stream, carbon-containing gas — carbon dioxide — is introduced. When this gas is decomposed at high temperatures, carbon comes from them (additional to the carbon obtained from the walls of the graphite crucible), as a result, the amount of material for the formation of nanotubes increases and the process productivity increases.
2.Example 3. The same as in example 1, only silicon is used as the heated material, as a result, silicon carbide nanotubes are formed, as shown in Fig.2.
3.Example 4. The same as in example 1, only when cobalt is added to the melt, as a result, multi-walled carbon nanotubes with a diameter of several tens of nanometers are formed, as shown in Fig. 3.
