Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to improvements in the characteristics of refrigeration units operating on an absorption-diffusion cycle, in particular, used in conjunction with housings designed to accommodate temperature-sensitive electrical and electronic equipment within which temperature control is provided.
State of the art
Many components of electrical and electronic equipment have an increased risk of malfunction, failure or, as a rule, accelerated deterioration of work and shortened service life when this equipment is exposed to significant fluctuations in temperature, humidity and other environmental parameters. This problem is particularly significant for equipment components that, for extended periods of time, should be relatively unprotected from the effects of the external atmosphere.
One such example is the nodes of regulatory equipment, and, in particular, their emergency or backup battery power. Such regulatory equipment can be used in electrical energy distribution, telecommunications, transportation or security systems, and it can often be located in isolated or insecure locations, inside or outside. Installing such equipment inside the enclosure in order to protect it from rain or other precipitation can in many cases increase temperature fluctuations, while exposure to sunlight on the enclosure will lead to heating of the enclosure contents to much higher temperatures than might otherwise be the case. In addition, in some applications, heat-generating equipment located close to temperature-sensitive equipment may cause additional thermal stresses. Therefore, there is a requirement regarding the provision of cooling or air temperature control of the most temperature-sensitive units of equipment.
In particular, it has been observed that battery backup for power distribution control systems and telecommunication systems operating in natural conditions has a significantly shorter service life than expected, due mainly to the gradual deterioration of operation due to fluctuations in temperature and / or humidity. Known in the art, solutions have temperature-controlled housings designed to accommodate sensitive equipment, ranging from simple ventilated housings to sophisticated air-temperature controlled systems. These solutions and systems include technologies such as thermoelectric devices, forced convection, heat pipes, phase-change materials and vapor compression cycles.
The challenge to be addressed with regard to such temperature-controlled housings is to make them as heat-efficient as possible, and at the same time to develop devices that do not have movable elements, which eliminates the need for regular and expensive maintenance due to the occurring malfunctions of these elements as a result of their mechanical abrasion and wear. Elements that may be excluded include mechanical components such as fans, pumps, compressors, and consumables such as filters.
Alternative refrigeration cycles or cooling means with respect to the above, which can be adapted for use with electrical and electronic equipment, include the absorption-diffusion refrigeration cycle. This cycle completely eliminates the need for mechanical energy. Instead of using mechanical energy, this cycle is based on the direct use of thermal energy as an energy source. Such cycles, in addition, use environmentally friendly fluids, are reliable, silent, relatively economical to implement and do not have moving parts. However, they are characterized by a relatively low value of the refrigeration coefficient, which must be increased so that it is possible to effectively cool electrical and electronic equipment, such as industrial redundant power supplies.
One of the main reasons for the unsatisfactory performance of existing refrigeration units operating in the absorption-diffusion refrigeration cycle is the insufficient transfer of heat from the heat-removing fins on the condenser to the external environment. With the usual geometry of the heat-removing fins, the part of the fins remote from the base plays a smaller role in the total heat transfer compared to the part that is closest to the base of the fins and plays the main role in the efficiency of heat transfer. In typical traditional refrigeration units operating on an absorption-diffusion cycle, the relative position of the condenser ribs results in less heat removal from the condenser compared to the optimal one. This means that such a cycle is carried out at higher temperatures and with less efficiency.
An object of the present invention is to provide a more efficient absorption unit operating in an absorption-diffusion cycle for use with enclosures in which temperature control is provided to accommodate electrical and electronic components, such as industrial redundant power supplies.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a refrigeration unit operating in an absorption-diffusion cycle, comprising a condenser tube passing through a heat sink and covered by it from the outside, the radiator provided with a sealed casing forming an internal cavity surrounding the condenser tube, which serves to accommodate a liquid coolant, moreover, the condenser tube is located within the cross section of the radiator, which tapers to a minimum thickness in the direction of the upper end of the radiator a mounted on a refrigeration unit. The internal cavity of the sealed enclosure may contain a mixture of water and glycol as a heat transfer fluid. In this case, the radiator may include a middle part sealed at opposite ends with the first and second end parts forming the specified cross section of the radiator and has the shape of a wing with a rounded lower end and a tapering upper end in cross section, while the specified middle part covers the condenser tube. The radiator can be equipped with a filler pipe designed to enter the liquid coolant into the inner cavity of the radiator and the cross section of the radiator is essentially the same in the direction parallel to the condenser tube.
In addition, the invention relates to a temperature-controlled chamber provided with the above-described refrigeration unit operating in an absorption-diffusion cycle.
In addition, the invention relates to a cabinet with temperature-controlled equipment, equipped with the above-described refrigeration unit operating in an absorption-diffusion cycle, in which the evaporator tube passes through the cabinet wall and through a second sealed enclosure to accommodate the liquid coolant, and forms part of the inner surface of the chamber so that the refrigeration unit during its operation extracts heat from the internal volume of the chamber and transfers it to the environment. In this case, the cabinet wall includes a layer of thermal insulation through which the evaporator tube passes; the evaporator tube passes through a recess made in the wall; the second sealed shell is made essentially flat in design along the entire inner surface of the wall; the evaporator tube extends horizontally through the upper part of the second sealed casing when the cabinet is oriented for use in such a way that when used, the convective flow of heat transfer fluid helps transfer heat from the internal volume of the cabinet.
The use of advanced units operating in the absorption-diffusion refrigeration cycle in accordance with the present invention allows to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of units in a wide range of ambient temperatures compared to known solutions. The temperature of industrial power supplies can be reduced with greater efficiency, since such power supplies can be easily thermally separated from other pieces of equipment due to their placement in small cases that produce only a small amount of heat during continuous charging of these power supplies. When applying the proposed improvement to the units described above, the cooling rate can be increased, and the cooling coefficient of the unit is increased.
The use of the radiator according to the invention in the form of a sealed enclosure filled with liquid leads to various improvements in the characteristics of the unit operating in the absorption-diffusion refrigeration cycle, including increased heat transfer when the heat dissipated from the condenser tube is dissipated into the heat transfer fluid inside the enclosure. The heat transfer fluid is preferably a mixture of water and glycol used due to its high heat capacity.
The advantages of the present invention can be achieved at low cost by modifying a typical unit operating in an absorption-diffusion cycle by supplying it with a sealed enclosure by “wrapping” this enclosure around a condenser tube.
The hermetic casing may be formed of one or a limited number of elements made of a material that makes it easier to manufacture the casing and its installation around an existing condenser tube.
With this modification, no elements with moving parts, such as a fan, would be required, which could increase the cost of maintaining the equipment. Instead, they provide more efficient heat dissipation from the condenser tube when there is no need to use forced convection. At the discretion, a fan can be added to the unit to further increase the cooling intensity, but at the cost of complicating the design.
Testing showed that when using a conventional 80 W unit operating on an absorption-diffusion cycle, a temperature difference (ΔT) of the order of 15 ° C can be achieved between the temperature inside the temperature-controlled case (designed, for example, to accommodate industrial power supplies) and ambient temperature. The use of a modified unit with a radiator in accordance with the present invention allows to increase the indicated temperature difference, as a rule, by 5 ° C. This allows the unit to be used at higher temperatures, while maintaining at the same time units of equipment inside the case within the optimal operating temperature range. The specified modified unit is thus able, as a rule, to function effectively at ambient temperatures up to 60 ° C, while maintaining the equipment inside the case at a temperature of less than 45 ° C, and is able to maintain an optimum temperature difference (ΔT) of 15 ° C up to room temperature temperature.

In Fig.2 shows a cross section of the
3.A casing filled with liquid or a
The
The size of the thermosiphon is preferably optimized to strike a balance between heat transfer efficiency, manufacturing cost, alignment with the refrigeration cycle, and fluid mass. The presented embodiment illustrates a particular preferred embodiment, in which the
Preferably, the evaporation tube 4 is located closer to the upper end of the
The hermetic casing 6, filled with liquid surrounding the evaporation tube 4, has the advantage of preventing the formation of ice on the evaporation tube during operation of the unit, and it is possible to create a more uniform temperature distribution throughout the entire internal volume of the cabinet. The use of the first sealed casing in the form of a
The
Figure 3 illustrates for comparison a conventional absorption-
The preferred shape of the
The dimensions of the radiator are preferably optimized to ensure a balance between: i) heat dissipation during heat dissipation, ii) manufacturing cost, iii) compliance with the operating conditions of the unit that implements the refrigeration cycle in which the radiator is mounted, and iv) the mass of the liquid coolant. For example, for a radiator, it may be necessary that it matches the disposable area of its placement near the equipment cabinet.
A radiator having the shape of a wing oriented vertically provides the greatest efficiency and continuous upward flow of heated air flowing along the side of the equipment cabinet from the base of the unit to the external environment. A typical radiator will have a surface area of sufficient magnitude to lower the temperature at the end of the condenser tube by 20 ° C compared with the temperature that the equivalent surface of the finned condenser tube has.
Since it is necessary that the cabinet with the equipment, to which the unit according to the invention is connected, be insulated from the external environment, this cabinet can be additionally equipped with a ventilation hole to ensure the dispersion of toxic or explosive gases (such as hydrogen) into the environment, preventing thereby, any explosive accumulation of gas inside the cabinet that could be released during operation of the equipment located in the cabinet.
Other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.
