Abstract
Description
The invention relates to products of the tobacco industry, in particular to cigarettes.
Cigarettes are known whose tobacco strand is surrounded by a layer of paper shell with water-repellent impregnation from a cellulose derivative, in particular ethyl cellulose.
The disadvantage of these known cigarettes is the formation of spots on cigarette paper, spoiling the appearance of the products and causing doubt in their quality.
Cigarette buyers view the white, stain-free appearance of the cigarette as an indication of quality. Even if this formulation is not unconditionally correct - in a humid climate, even after a short storage period, cigarettes may have color changes that do not impair their taste during smoking - manufacturers should be guided by market forecasts.
Stains on cigarette paper can be explained by the fact that the substances dissolved in the contact between the paper and the tobacco particles contained in the tobacco can penetrate the paper, as it is both porous and hydrophilic.
One could imagine that staining on cigarette paper can be reduced by covering it with some substances that make the paper completely impenetrable. Such coatings have been proposed to cause rapid quenching of a delayed cigarette. In order to be able to control the content of various substances contained in the smoke, the cigarette manufacturer is generally interested, however, in the specific breathability of the cigarette paper. The problem, therefore, is that, on the one hand, withstand paper permeable to air, and on the other hand, reduce the permeability of the dissolved constituent parts of the cigarette.
In US-A 5,143,099, in order to solve the problem, it was suggested that the shell of the cigarette be made of two layers of paper, the inner shell having a very high permeability, so that the total permeability remains high enough. In this regard, the possibility of making the inner shell water-repellent by the addition of 0.5% alkyl ketene dimer has already been mentioned.
Compared with the prior art, the basis of the invention is to make the use of two layers of paper unnecessary, namely, due to an impregnating substance that does not have a harmful effect, if possible, slightly alters the taste of smoking and prevents the formation of spots on the shell of cigarettes.
They tried to solve this problem due to the fact that the cigarette tobacco rod was provided with a casing including a layer of paper with water-repellent impregnation from a cellulose derivative, in particular ethyl cellulose. European patent EP 0 419 981 shows just such a cigarette, in which, however, the permeability lies below 5 units according to the CORESTA standard.
The invention is based on the fact that the impregnation can be made thin enough to obtain the desired breathability, since it is applied in several layers. According to the invention, it is thus provided that, in order to achieve a breathability of the casing of at least 20, preferably at least 50, CORESTA units, the cellulose derivative is applied in several layers.
Various cellulose derivatives meet the physical conditions set for breathability and water resistance of the impregnated paper, for example, sufficiently highly derivatized cellulose ethers and cellulose esters (e.g. nitrocellulose). Ethyl cellulose is preferred, however, since it is harmless with a sufficient degree of reliability - it complies with German tobacco regulations - and practically does not alter the taste sensations when smoking.
Other details of the invention are discussed further on the basis of comparative experiments.
Cigarette paper with a weight per unit area of 26 g / m 2 was coated with a layer of cellulose acetate propionate (CAP) or cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) or ethyl cellulose (EC) by intaglio printing using a coating roller. The amount of applied material was approximately 0.7 g / m 2 . Using the cigarette paper thus obtained, cigarettes were made.
To test the susceptibility to staining of the cigarettes in packaged and unpacked condition, they were exposed either at 20 o C and 60% relative humidity, or at 30 o C and 80% relative humidity. Spot tests (in each case 100 cigarettes) were carried out immediately after production, as well as after 24 and 48 hours. The analysis was carried out according to the size of the spots and their number. By sketching, the results were translated into a point system.
The assessment gave the following results: coverage of 0.7 g EC - 572 points; coating 0.7 g of CAP - 223 points; Coating 0.7 g CAB - 77 points.
Although the paper coated with a layer of ethyl cellulose showed a relatively strong stain susceptibility (high number of dots), further improvement was carried out with this material, since an undesirable change in the nature of the smoke was detected with CAP and CAB. Nevertheless, when using paper coated with an EC layer, it was also first of all found to have a significantly lower susceptibility to staining as compared to paper on which no layer was applied. About a month later, however, cigarettes made using paper coated with an EC layer had small dark spots, while cigarettes made of paper not coated had large yellow spots. On this basis, it was suggested that, due to defects in the coating, dyes penetrate the paper, the spread of which is prevented by the coating. Due to these considerations, experiments with double-coated paper were repeated, i.e. with cigarette paper coated 1/4 g / cm 2 EU. Thus, according to the calculation method reproduced above, the susceptibility to stains decreased to 56 points, i.e., by ten percent compared to a single coating. This amazing result is confirmed by lengthy trials.
It should be especially emphasized that the described success was achieved, although the porosity of the paper, which before coating was 50 units according to the CORESTA standard, after coating was still 20 units according to the CORESTA standard. The first experiments with highly porous paper from the source material confirm that even with a final porosity of 50 units according to the CORESTA standard, a radical reduction in susceptibility to staining is achieved (one unit according to the CORESTA standard (CU) shows how many cm 3 of air per minute flows through the surface of 1 cm paper 2 under the pressure of a column of water 10 cm high).
