Abstract

The cigarette has its tobacco strand wrapped around with a layer of paper with water-repellent impregnation made from cellul derivatives to obtain air permeability in the wrapper and avoid spotting on the wrapper. The cigarette has its tobacco strand wrapped around with a layer of paper with water-repellent impregnation made from a cellulose derivative, preferably ethyl cellulose, to obtain air permeability in wrapper of at least 20 Coresta units, preferably at least Coresta units. The cellulose derivative is applied in several layers.

Description

The invention is based on the problem of the formation of stains on the shell of To avoid cigarettes.

Buyers of cigarettes look at the spotless white appearance of a cigarette as an indication of the quality. Even if this view is not necessarily correct - in In warm and humid climates, cigarettes can discoloration even after a short storage period have, which do not affect the taste of smoke - have the manufacturers to meet the expectations of the market.

The staining on cigarette paper can be explained by the fact that to the Contact points between paper and tobacco particles dissolved tobacco ingredients the Penetrate paper as it is both porous and hydrophilic.

It would be conceivable to reduce the staining of cigarette paper by this is coated with any substances that make the paper completely make impermeable. Such coatings have been suggested to be to cause rapid extinction of stored cigarettes. To the content of different Being able to control smoke ingredients is generally the cigarette maker However, interested in a certain air permeability of the cigarette paper. The Problem is, on the one hand, to keep the paper permeable to air, on the other hand, to reduce the permeability to dissolved cigarette components.

A 5,143,099 has been proposed to solve the problem, the cigarette wrapper by forming two layers of paper, the inner shell having very high permeability so that the total permeability remains sufficiently high. In this In connection, the possibility has already been mentioned of adding the inner shell by adding of 0.5% alkyl ketene dimer to repel water.

The invention is compared to the mentioned prior art, the task to make the use of two layers of paper redundant, namely by means of an impregnating substance, which is harmless and the smoke taste changed as little as possible.

It was surprising that it would lead to the solution, the cigarette with to provide a cover which is a layer of paper with water repellent Impregnation of a cellulose derivative, in particular of ethyl cellulose. Namely, EP 0 419 981 shows such a cigarette, in which, however, the Air permeability is less than 5 Coresta units.

According to the invention it is provided that the Achieving an air permeability of the shell of at least 20, preferably at least 50 Coresta units, the cellulose derivative in multiple layers is applied.

As such, various cellulose derivatives fulfill the stated physical requirements Conditions regarding air permeability and water impermeability of the impregnated Papiers, for example, sufficiently highly derivatized cellulose ethers and Cellulose esters (e.g., nitrocellulose). However, ethylcellulose is preferred, since these with Safety is harmless - it corresponds to the German tobacco regulation - and the Smoky taste practically unchanged.

Further details of the invention will subsequently be described by way of comparative experiments discussed.

Cigarette paper with a basis weight of 26 g / m 2 was gravure coated by means of a coating roll with cellulose acetoproprionate (CAP) or with cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) or with ethyl cellulose (EC). The application rate was about 0.7 g / m 2 . Cigarettes were produced with the cigarette paper thus produced.

To check for their staining, the cigarettes were packed in and unpackaged state either at 20 ° C and 60% rel. Humidity or at 30 ° C and 80% rel. Moisture stored. The stain check (100 cigarettes each) takes place immediately after production as well as after 24 and 48 hours. It was evaluated after Stain size and number, over a weighting were the results in one Transferred points system.

Die Auswertung ergab folgendes Ergebnis: Beschichtung mit 0,7 g EC 572 Punkte Beschichtung mit 0,7 g CAP 223 Punkte Beschichtung mit 0,7 g CAB 77 Punkte The evaluation gave the following result: Coating with 0.7 g EC 572 points Coating with 0.7 g CAP 223 points Coating with 0.7 g CAB 77 points

Although ethylcellulose-coated paper showed relatively high susceptibility to staining (high score), further development was performed with this material because of an undesirable change in the smoke character of CAP and CAB. After all, even with the use of EC-coated paper compared to uncoated paper, a significantly lower stain frequency was initially observed. However, after about one month, the cigarettes made with EC-coated paper showed small dark spots, while those with uncoated paper had larger yellow spots. This suggested that by defects in the coating dyes penetrate into the paper, whose spread is prevented by the coating. Based on these considerations, the experiments were repeated with double-coated paper, ie with cigarette paper loaded with 1.4 g / m 2 EC. Thus, the susceptibility to staining decreased to 56 points according to the calculation method reproduced above, thus reducing by one order of magnitude compared to the simple coating. This excellent result was confirmed in the long-term trial.

Of particular note is that the described success was achieved although the porosity of the paper, which before coating was 50 Coresta units, was still 20 coresta units after coating. First experiments with more porous paper as starting material confirm that even with a final porosity of 50 Coresta units, the inventive radical reduction of stain-susceptibility is achieved (a Coresta unit (CU) indicates how many cm 3 of air per minute through an area of 1 cm 2 of paper flow under a pressure of 10 cm of water).
