Trombone rotary supercharger is designed to increase air pressure in the intake tract of an internal combustion engine. According to the principle of operation, the Trombone rotary supercharger is similar to the Comprex wave pressure exchanger of Brown and Boveri company (Switzerland) (described in the book by Matskerle Y. Modern economical car, M. Mashinostroenie, 1987, pp. 175-178), which, due to the constant length of the rotor channels, has a narrow range of effective operation, which hinders its use on internal combustion engines. In contrast, the Trombone supercharger has the ability to change the length of the channels, which makes it wide-range, and the presence of centrifugal pump elements increases the efficiency.
The main difference between the Trombone supercharger and the Comprex supercharger is that the channels of its rotor are not straight, but have a C-shape.
In figure 1, 2 shows the proposed device.
14. The rotor consists of two parts: stationary relative to the axis of the rotor and movable, with the ability to move along the axis. The stationary part consists of a hub 1, a cylindrical body 2, longitudinal partitions 3 connecting the hub 1 with the cylindrical body 2 and the fixed part of the cylindrical separator 4. The partitions 3 have longitudinal slots in which the movable part of the rotor is located, consisting of a cylindrical separator 5 having windows 6, on the right side of which (according to the drawing) there are end partitions 7 located between the longitudinal partitions 2. A cylindrical spacer 5 through the hub 8 is connected to the control device. The entire rotor through transmission 9 is connected with the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine. At the end of the housing 10 there are purge windows: for air inlet 11, for exit from the air blower 12, for exhaust gas inlet 13 and exhaust gas outlet 14.
We consider the operation of the supercharger using one of the rotor channels as an example. When the rotor rotates, the end of the channel, lying closer to the axis of rotation of the rotor, is opposite the window 13 and the shock wave of exhaust gases compresses the air in the channel, forcing it to the end of the channel, which is further from the axis of the rotor. During the movement of the shock wave, the rotor rotates and the outer end of the channel is opposite the window 12, connected to the intake manifold of the internal combustion engine, where compressed air is forced out. With further rotation of the rotor, the outer end of the channel moves to the window for exhaust gas 14 and the exhaust gases, which retained inertia, exit through it into the exhaust tract. At the same time, a new portion of air is sucked into the rarefaction zone that has arisen in the channel behind the exhaust gases, through a window 11. The same cycle takes place alternately in all channels of the rotor. To change the acoustic setting of the supercharger, the control device moves the movable part of the rotor, which changes the length of the working channels and the supercharger setting.
