Claims

1. Water-soluble or water-dispersible associative cationic amphiphilic polyurethanes of the formula I

RX- (P) _n - [L- (Y) _m ] -L '- (P') _p -X'-R '(I)

in which R and R ', identical or different, denote a hydrophobic group or a hydrogen atom;

X and X ', identical or different, denote a group containing an amine functional group which may have a hydrophobic group, or also an L "group;

L, L ’and L", identical or different, denote a group derived from diisocyanate;

P and P ', identical or different, denote a group containing an amine functional group, which may have a hydrophobic group;

Y is a hydrophilic group;

r = 1 to 100, preferably 1 to 50, more preferably 1 to 25;

n, m and p, independently from each other, have values from 0 to 1000;

wherein the molecule contains at least one protonated or quaternized amine functional group and at least one hydrophobic group.

2. Polyurethanes according to claim 1, characterized in that the only hydrophobic groups are the groups R and R 'at the ends of the chain.

3. The polyurethanes according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that R and R 'both independently represent a hydrophobic group, X and X', each, denotes a group L ", n and p have the values 1 - 1000 and L, L ', L ", P, P', Y and m have the meanings indicated in claim 1.

4. The polyurethanes according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that R and R ', both independently from each other, denote a hydrophobic group, X and X', each, denotes a group L ", n and p = 0, and L, L ', L ", Y and m have the meanings indicated in claim 1.

Polyurethanes according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterized in that R and R 'denote a radical or polymer with a saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched hydrocarbon chain, in which one or more carbon atoms can be replaced by heteroatoms selected from N , S, O and P, or a radical with a silicone or perfluorinated chain.

R ₁ and R ₃ , identical or different, denote a linear or branched C ₁ -C ₃₀ alkyl or alkenyl radical or an aryl radical, wherein at least one carbon atom can be replaced by a heteroatom selected from N, S, O, P;

9. Polyurethanes according to any one of claims 1 to 8, characterized in that the groups L, L 'and L ", identical or different, denote a group of the formula

in which Z is —O—, —S— or —NH— and R ₄ is a linear or branched alkylene radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and which may include a saturated or unsaturated ring, an arylene radical, where one or more carbon atoms can be replaced by heteroatoms selected from N, S, O and R.

10. Polyurethanes according to any one of claims 1 to 9, characterized in that the groups P and P ', identical or different, denote at least one of the following formulas:

R ₆ , R ₈ and R ₉ have the same meanings as R ₁ and R ₃ as defined in claim 7;

R ₁₀ denotes a possibly unsaturated straight or branched alkylene group which may contain one or more heteroatoms selected from N, S, O and P;

A ^- is a physiologically acceptable counterion.

11. Polyurethanes according to any one of claims 1 to 10, characterized in that Y represents a group derived from ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol or propylene glycol, or a group derived from a polymer selected from polyethers, sulfonated polyesters and sulfonated polyamides.

12. Polyurethanes according to any one of claims 1 to 11, as a thickener or gelling agent in compositions for external use in the field of cosmetics.

13. A cosmetic composition comprising in a cosmetically acceptable medium at least one polyurethane, as defined in any one of claims 1 to 11.
