The end of a plastic pipe is softened and passed through the treatment and forming sections of a machine. The tube end is expanded and the tube is advanced over the highest point of the treatment section which slopes outwards. At the next stage the circumference of the pipe is reduced over a suction sloping inwards. Finally the pipe is moved over a second outward sloping section and the wall thickness at its end is increased by pressure exerted on the pipe. The forming unit is equipped with two split mandrels located in a ring. These are used to form the inside of the socket. Operation of the two mandrels is interlocked.
