Abstract

Machine for smoothing (paring without polishing) and polishing the faces of ornamental stones. It consists of a rolling mat on which cylinders 7 are placed, the shafts of which are perpendicular to the centre of the bases and parallel to the conveyor belt 5. Bearings which clasp the ends of the shafts are linked to lifting spindles 6 which cause them to rise and fall. The cylinders 7 may be metallic or consist of a hard substance, such as plastic. They are firstly coated with a nylon foam tape and then with a diamond-type or emery-type tape, each time of finer grade. On the metal-only cylinders it is also possible to place diamond-type abrasives, Each cylinder 7 corresponds to a motor 8 which imparts its rotary movement to it. Beside and along the entire length of the mat 5 there is a tube 10 from which narrow tubes 12 emerge laterally, said tubes 12 being perforated on a single side, casting a number of jets of water onto the surface of contact between the stone to be polished and the abrasive. The sheets of ornamental stone transported by the conveyor belt 5 enter into contact with the lower part of the cylinders 7, the first being for paring and the latter for polishing, at the same time as the perforated tubes 12 spray water onto the surface of contact between each cylinder and the stone. Paring and polishing are determined by the height of baffles located in the lower part of each lifting spindle 6. When passing under the last cylinder 8, the faces are polished. Abrasion increases with the number of cylinders, with the latter's diameters and with the increase in the rotations of the motors, and decreases with the increase in speed of the conveyor belt. On account of these facts, the number of cylinders and the diameters may vary. On the control panel, there is a switch corresponding to each motor. It is therefore possible to work only with coarser-grade rolls (smoothing down) or with all of them (polishing). <IMAGE>

The object of my invention was to get a machine that was much cheaper and faster without reducing the quality of the polishing.

He knew that any polishing machine, of any brand, uses eight to twelve heads, that is, eight motors at the bottom of which there are circular plates. Each plate takes on average four abrasive pads. There are shoes that last twelve hours but others do not last more than three hours. In other words, the maintenance of these machines is very expensive. I also noticed that the beds use sandpaper that they put on the angle grinders to finish the polishing and get a good job. This fact led me to try a solution using sandpaper.

After having several hypotheses that did not work out in a local metal mechanic, I arrived at the machine that I now want to patent, which has already polished marble plates 60 cm. x 30 cm. I have in my power and I can show it to anyone.

Looking at figure 1 we see a conveyor belt (5) with its table (1) the base (2) the transport drum (3) and the gear reducer of the transport screen (4) we also see the amounts of the polishing rollers ( 9) consisting of a steel support supported laterally in two granzeps in which is inserted a bearing that supports the cylinder shaft, which in turn is connected to an engine (8). The lifting spindle (6) is a screw connected on one side to the movable support, on the other to a handle. Rotating the handle, the support moves up or down until it settles on a stop. This boils down to a 2 or 3 cm machined strip of iron. height that is placed at the bottom of the movable support (when we want to polish sheet 1, 2, or 3 cm.). The collector (11) is the extension of the water supply pipe (10) that is located along the table from which the supply pipes (12) eject water jets at the roller contact surface (7) perpendicularly, coated with abrasive belts, with the stone plate to be polished.

As it is necessary to remove the cylinders to change the abrasive belts, it is eliminated longitudinally over a distance of 60 mm. half of the shaft on one and the other side of the cylinder. The same is done in the other two pieces of the shaft that enters the uprights. Overlapping these halves, we have the whole shaft with the same diameter. A clamp (13) tightens the two axle halves making it solid. The clamp is well known and used. It consists of a tapered bush with an inner diameter equal to the shaft diameter. It has grooves on the top of the cone for tightening and an extension on the base with a thread. Another bushing with a conical perforation like the first cone has a thread on the side of the cylinder base. By turning a KM-type nut over the two threads, the cone of the outer sleeve slides over the inside causing tightening.
