Abstract

The road surface (11c) slopes gently towards a gutter (12) at the edge, covered with perforated plates (20). At intervals, drainage channels (13) leave the gutter, run through a sump (17) which may be open at the top, and run out into a drainage ditch (15). There are non-return flap valves (14) at the ends (13a) of the drainage pipes. The tops of the lengths of pipe (13b) passing through the sumps are cut away, allowing water to overflow into the bottom (17a) of each sump. Water entering each sump is taken out via further drainpipes (18,19).
