Abstract

The present invention provides a specified polyvinyl alcohol, which has excellent transparency and viscosity stability when made into an aqueous solution and for which the symmetry coefficient based on JIS K 0124 (2011) satisfies formula (1), as well as an emulsion polymerization dispersant of excellent emulsion polymerization stability comprising same. The present invention also provides an aqueous emulsion and an adhesive, which comprise same and are able to establish both excellent flowability and coating film water resistance. 0.70 = W0.05h/2f = 1.10 (1) (In the formula, W0.05h represents the peak width at the 5 pcnt peak height position and f represents the distance from the peak starting point (a) at the peak width of the 5 pcnt peak height position to the intersection point (b) between a horizontal line containing the peak starting point (a) and a perpendicular line containing the peak apex.)
