Abstract

It is an object to provide a specific unmodified polyvinyl alcohol having excellent clarity and viscosity stability in the form of an aqueous solution, and to provide an emulsion polymerization dispersant containing this unmodified polyvinyl alcohol and thus having excellent emulsion polymerization stability. It is another object to provide an aqueous emulsion and an adhesive each containing this unmodified polyvinyl alcohol and each capable of not only exhibiting excellent fluidity but also forming a highly water resistant coating film. An unmodified polyvinyl alcohol (A-i) having a degree of saponification of 80 to 99.5 mol%, a viscosity average degree of polymerization of 200 to 5000, and a symmetry factor that satisfies the following formula (1) as determined by gradient high-performance liquid chromatography for reversed-phase separation using a water-acetone eluent according to JIS K 0124 (2011): 0.70Wo.o,ij2f 1.10 (1) where WO.OMI is a peak width at a 5% peak height, and f is a distance from a leading edge point a at the 5% peak height to an intersection point 5 between a horizontal line including the leading edge point a and a vertical line including a peak top.
