Abstract

The invention relates to a method for detecting the energy and water consumption of dishwashers, whereby the energy/water consumption rating can be optimized for dishwashers. The amount of energy and water required to operate dishwashers comprising at least two separate washing systems, each having a separate closable washing container, is detected separately for each washing system, and the energy/water consumption is rated on the basis of the amount of energy and water detected for each washing system. The invention also relates to dishwashers provided with at least two separate washing systems, each having a separate closable washing container, in which the energy and water consumption is detected and rated according to the inventive method in order to optimize the energy/water consumption rating.

Description

New Zealand Paient Spedficaiion for Paient Number 533580

Aldridge & Co Ltd

Translation from German

53 35

Patent, Legal, and Technical Translations • Wellington, NZ

WO 03/053209 A1

PCT/EP02/13250

Method of Determining the Energy and Water Consumption of Dishwashing Machines; and Dishwashing Machines

The invention relates to a method for determining the energy and water consumption of dishwashing machines that consist of at least two separate 5 washing-systems each with its own closable, sealable washing-container. The invention relates also to dishwashing machines consisting of at least two separate washing-systems each with its own closable, sealable washing-container.

WO 93/12706 and WO 98/33426 disclose dishwashing machines that have at 10 least two separate washing-systems each with its own closable, sealable washing-container. Because the individual washing-systems can also be arranged spatially separate from each other, each washing-system is individually provided with all the necessary equipment for dishwashing machines, e.g. circulating pump, washing-liquid pump, control elements, etc. Therefore, when 15 deciding on the energy/water consumption rating, the figures for the individual washing-units are determined separately for each unit.

Separate washing-systems enable lightly-soiled items to be put in one of the washing-systems and heavily-soiled items, with hard-to-remove soiling, to be put in the other washing-system. Because the energy and water consumption 20 amounts are always a function of the degree of soiling, and of the washing-programme selected, it will be found, when deciding on the energy rating of dishwashing machines with at least two separate washing-systems, that, in normal use, the energy and water consumption measured will be low in one of the washing-systems, and higher in the other. For example, if the energy and 25 water consumption is measured in a first washing-container designed preferably for lightly-soiled cutlery, then this will normally turn out to be low, while in the case of a washing-program designed for the cleaning of heavily-soiled items, a higher level of water and energy consumption will be found. The greater the difference between the washing-programs selected in the separate washing-30 containers, the greater will be the difference between the different figures

2

WO 03/053209 A1 PCT/EP02/13250

obtained. Because, however, there are two separate washing-systems, the figure for one of them will not have any effect on the other.

The objective of the present invention is therefore to provide a method enabling the energy/water consumption rating of dishwashing machines to be optimised; 5 and also to provide dishwashing machines whose energy/water consumption rating is optimised, or at least to provide the public with a useful alternative.

This objective is achieved through the inventive method for determining the energy and water consumption of dishwashing machines that consist of at least two separate washing-systems each with its own closable, sealable washing-10 container, in that the amounts of energy and water required to operate the respective washing-systems are determined separately for each washing-system; and the energy/water consumption rating for the dishwashing machine is determined from the energy and water consumption figures of the respective washing-systems. Beneficial further developments of the present invention are 15 characterised in the dependent claims.

In the inventive method for determining the energy and water consumption, suitable standard place-settings are put into the two or more separate washing-systems, for the purpose of determining the energy and water consumption figures; the items to be washed are apportioned according to the degree of 20 soiling—for example, lightly-soiled items are put in the upper washing-system, and heavily-soiled items are put in the lower, or adjacent, washing-system.

The choice of the respective washing-programs for achieving an optimal cleaning-performance is made in accordance with the respective degree of soiling. As a result of this targeted program-selection, the water and energy 25 consumption in the washing-system that only contains lightly-soiled items will turn out to be low, whereas the water and energy consumption in the washing-system with heavily-soiled items will turn out to be considerably higher.

According to the invention, the respective water/energy consumption figures obtained which are to be used as the basis for deciding on the energy/water 30 consumption rating are obtained by adding the respective energy/water consumption figures of the individual washing-systems.

I ID OCT 2005 I

1 ftPncjAifc-.

Aldridge & Co Ltd

Patent, Legal, and Technical Translations * Wellington, NZ

3

WO 03/053209 A1 PCT/EP02/13250

Dishwashing machines with at least two washing-systems are advantageous, in particular, in that selecting the washing-programs can be tailored correctly to the degree of soiling of the items to be washed, and thus the energy and water consumption can be adapted to the respective requirements. The objective of 5 providing dishwashing machines whose energy/water consumption rating is optimised is achieved as follows: when washing a place-setting in a dishwashing machine with at least two washing-systems, the energy and water consumption is reduced compared with conventional dishwashing machines having only a single washing-container; also, according to the invention, the individual 10 consumption figures are added together. The consumption figure thus obtained is lower than with conventional dishwashing machines, despite the same washing-result being achieved; and, according to the invention, this figure is used as the basis for deciding on the energy/water consumption rating.

The invention is thus successful in providing a method that enables the 15 energy/water consumption rating of dishwashing machines to be optimised, and in providing dishwashing machines whose energy/water consumption rating is optimised.

4

WO 03/053209 A1

PCT/EP02/13250

Claims

5
