Abstract

An additive for accelerating the setting reaction of gypsum products comprises a gypsum accelerator combined with a bisulfate salt. The gypsum accelerator is calcium sulfate dihydrate. The accelerator may be treated with a coating agent such as a sugar, a starch and/or boric acid. The additives are used in a process in which the bisulfate salt and a portion of the calcium sulfate hemihydrate feed are prewetted. The prewetted bisulfate salt and calcium sulfate hemihydrate feed is then combined in the main mixer with the gypsum accelerator, water and the remaining portion of the calcium sulfate hemihydrate feed to form a slurry. The slurry is formed into its desired shape and allowed to set.
