Abstract
Described is a method of evaluating germination readiness of conifer somatic embryos, which comprises measuring the dehydrin group protein content of the embryos and comparing the level measured with that of zygotic embryos at a similar development stage. Also described are conifer somatic embryos that have a content of dehydrin group proteins as determined by the electrophoresis-gel blot technique, wherein the dehydrin level is suitably adjusted to increase the quality of the embryos.
