Abstract

A label applicator feeds labels on a backing strip from a cassette to a pivoted applicator arm. The backing strip has a central longitudinal slit. There is a V-shaped notch at the free end of the applicator arm. When the label strip encounters this, the backing strip splits into two portions and which are fed back up the applicator arm. The labels, now free of the backing strip are pressed onto articles by a wheel. The applicator is intended for use with a conveyor for conveying articles such as fruit or vegetables. As the articles move along the conveyor, a sensor senses the presence of an article, and activates a feed motor to advance the label strip by one label. The pivoting arm allows the applicator to adapt to different sizes of article.
