New Zealand No. International No. 269155 Priority Date(s):....Tl.:!7.:.?.i Complete Specification Filed: ..7 C!ass: (C) Publication Dato:. j ■ .0. Journal No: I.Mffl NEW ZEALAND PATENTS ACT 1953 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION Title of Invention: Louvre window Name, address and nationality of applicant(s) as in international application form: dmu-o CUum ALAIN VILLAFINES, of 3 rue Gcorgca Vallorey, 1~ 01020 Castanet Tolooan; France a -^e^ck cilizerv «• £69155 TRADUCTION CERTIFlft CONFORME A (.'ORIGINAL C. PER ROT, Expert pr6s la Cour d'Appel de Toulouse Franca 1 - AVR.1996 n. i I /me NE VARIETUR LOUVRE-TYPE- WINDOW Tho, subject of the present invention is.a louvre-type window comprising a metal frame defining an opening in which are arranged closure slats mounted so as to be fastened on horizontal bars, each movable in rotation about their longitudinal axis and each in engagement with an actuating mechanism, via the manoeuvring of which the bars are simultaneously entrained in rotation in a synchronous manner and the slats are entrained towards a position of closure or towards a position of opening.
A window of this type is, in particular, known under the trade name "Duro".
One of the drawbacks of the windows of the prior art lies in the fact that the actuating mechanism is placed in the opening defined by the frame, this being laterally to the slats and bars which is unattractive and cumbersome. Moreover, the arrangement of the mechanism inside the opening reduces the useful width of the latter. Finally, it should be noted that, because of its arrangement, the actuating mechanism is not protected from dust and wind-borne abrasive particles. abovementioned problems by proposing a louvre-type window in which the actuating mechanism is concealed and protected and located outside the opening defined by the frame. the present invention, comprising a frame 1 consisting of the assembly of two vertical uprights 2 with two horizontal crosspieces, defining an opening in which are arranged closure slats 4 mounted so as to be fastened on horizontal bars extending from one vertical upright 2 to the other in the plane of opening, the said bars each being mounted in rotation about their longitudinal axis and each being in engagement with an actuating mechanism, via the manoeuvring of which the bars 3 are entrained in rotation and the slats are manoeuvred towards a position of closure or towards a position of opening, is' 'characterized essentially in that: The aim of the present invention is to solve the To this end, the louvre-type window according to TRADUCTION CERTIFlft CONFORME A L'ORIGINAl C. PERROT, Expert prts la Cour d'Appel de Toulouse France / 1 - AVR. 1996 - the vertical uprights 2 each consist of a profile having a ^.-shaped cross-section so as to determine a vertical housing, lateral to the opening of the window, open in the opposite way to the opening and separated from the said opening by the web 13 of the profile, which web is a vertical wall, orthogonal to the plane of the opening, - each bar 3, along its axis of rotation, is equipped with two end pivot pieces 9 each engaged in a rotational guide bearing 13A having the form of a cylindrical perforation passing right through the wall 13 constituting the web of the upright, - the actuating mechanism is mounted in the vertical housing of one of the uprights 2 and comprises a non-reversing motor assembly provided with a rotary output shaft 19, for power take-off, to which is fastened a lever 20, at the end of which is articulated the end of a link 21 articulated via its other end to one of the movable elements of a movement transmission consisting of a manoeuvring rod 6 extending vertically in the housing of the upright, to which rod are articulated a plurality of mutually parallel links 8 of equal length developing perpendicularly to the plane of the opening and each fastened to a pivot piece 9 and to one only.
According to another characteristic of the invention, each pivot piece 9 passes right through the wall 13 of the corresponding upright by passing through the corresponding bearing 13A and includes a stud 11 engaged in a housing 12 made in the corresponding end of the bar, a cylindrical bearing surface 9A axially extending the said stud interacting in rotational guiding with the bearing 13A and a terminal part 9B axially extending the cylindrical bearing surface 9A in the vertical housing formed by the corresponding upright and separated from the latter by a shoulder, the said terminal part 9B receiving, so as to be fastened, the corresponding link 8.
According to yet another characteristic- of the invention, each pivot piece 9 in its stud 11 has a TRADUCTION CERTIFY CONfORME A L 'ORIGINAL C. PERROT, Exoert prds la Cour d'Apoel de Toulouse France /i - AVR. iyyo . NE VARIETUR Kl. /)<*<& diametrical slot 2.3 dividing the said stud into two parts. Moreover, each pivot., piece 9 has passing right through it, along its central axis of symmetry, a longitudinal perforation 24 in which a blocking member 25 is 5 inserted which, on the one hand, radially expands the stud 11 so as to ensure blocking by adherence of the said stud 11 in the housing 12 of the corresponding end of the -■bar 3 and which, on the other hand, fastens the corresponding link 8 to the terminal part 9B, the said 10 link 8 being provided with a perforation in which the blocking member 25 engages . ..

Figure 1 shows a louvre-type window comprising a metal frame 1 consisting of the assembly of two vertical uprights 2 of U-shaped cross-section with a horizontal upper crosspiece and a horizontal lower crosspiece. These two crosspieces also have a U-shaped cross-section.
With respect to the quadrangular opening determined by the frame, the flanges of the profiles constituting the uprights 2 and the crosspieces are parallel to the plane of the opening and oriented opposite to the latter, whereas the web of these profiles is perpendicular to the plane of the said opening. More precisely, the opening is delimited on the left and on the right by the upper surface of the web of the left and right uprights and at the top and at the bottom by the upper surface of the web of the upper and lower crosspieces.
The quadrangular opening as defined receives closure slats 4 of generally rectangular shape each mounted so as to be fastened on a horizontal rotary bar 3 interacting with an actuating mechanism which is mounted in the vertical housing formed by one of the uprights.
As may be observed, the slats may be fastened by rivets or screws on their respective bar (Figure 4), or, alternatively, if they each consist of a glass blade, may be positioned via one of their longitudinal edges in a trough made over the entire length of their respective bar (Figure 9).
According to another embodiment (Figures 9 and 10), the slats and their bar are made in a single piece.
As may be seen in Figures 3, 9 and 10, each slat is offset with respect to its bar so that its centre of gravity is also offset with respect to the axis of TRADUCTION CERTIFlft CONFORME A (.'ORIGINAL C. PERROT, Expert pr6s la Cour d'Appel de Toulouse France ! 1 - AVR. 1996 rotation of^ its bar. At the rear of bar;—the—olat forms a heel. In the closureposition, the slats overlap one another and extend "downwards from their bar. Still in this closure position, the heel of each slat develops above the corresponding bar and is covered by the lower part of the slat positioned immediately above. Such a position of closure is shown in Figure 9.
In the position of opening, the slats develop perpendicularly to the opening.
Each bar 3 extends horizontally from one upright to the other and receives a pivot piece 9 at each of its ends. The two pivot pieces 9 possessed by each bar are engaged, respectively, in a bearing 13A made in the web of the left upright of the frame and in a bearing 13A made in the web 13 of the right upright of the frame. The bearings 13A have the form of a cylindrical perforation passing right through the web 13 of the corresponding upright.
Each pivot piece 9 passes right through the wall 13 of the corresponding upright by passing through the bearing 13A and has a stud 11 engaged and blocked in a housing 12 made in the corresponding end of the bar, the said housing having a complementary shape to that of the stud, a cylindrical bearing surface 9A axially extending the said stud interacting in rotational guiding with the bearing 13A and a terminal part 9B axially extending the cylindrical bearing surface 9A in the vertical housing formed by the corresponding upright and separated from the latter by a shoulder forming a stop and opposing the passage of the terminal part 9B through the bearing 13A. The housing 12 which .the bar has at each end matches the shape of the stud, which ensures perfect coaxiality between the bar and the pivot pieces 9.
The housing 12 which each bar has at each end may be made by machining, for example, in the bar or, alternatively, according to another arrangement of the invention, in an insert piece 18 engaged and blocked in the corresponding end of the bar- According v.o this embodiment, the bar is hollow, and the insert pieces 18 may be engaged forcibly TRADUCTION CERTIFlfE CONFORM A L'ORIGINAL C. PERROT, Expert prts la Cour d'Appel de Toulouse France /- 1 - AVR.1996 NE VARIETUR - in their baj:, which will fasten them tfl. the latter. ^ ' /iPl The terminal part 9B- of each 'pivot piece 9 is securely attached to an actuating mechanism mounted in the vertical housing of the upright. This actuating 5 mechanism comprises a non-reversing motor assembly provided with a rotary output shaft 19, for power takeoff, to which is fastened a lever 20 at the end of which is articulated the end of a link 21 articulated via its other end to one of the movable elements of a movement 10 transmission consisting of a manoeuvring rod 6 extending vertically in the housing of the upright, to which rod are articulated a plurality of links 8 fastened respectively to the pivot pieces 9, each at the terminal part 9B of the corresponding pivot piece. The mutually parallel 15 links 8 of equal length define, in combination with the rod 6 and the pivot pieces 9, deformable parallelograms, the deformation of the parallelograms and thus the pivoting of the pivot pieces 9 and, consequently, the rotation of the bars 3 and of the slats 4 being obtained 2 0 by displacement of the rod 6 vertically in one direction or in the other.
According to the preferred embodiment, the link 21 is articulated to the rod 6. The rod 6 has the form of a rigid strip of rectangular cross-section arranged 25 parallel to the wall 13 at a distance from the.latter.
The rod 6 receives an articulation spindle 31 of the link 21. This articulation spindle has a head forming a shoulder and is engaged in an orifice provided for this purpose in the rod 6 and passing right through it. The 30 shouldered head of the spindle, the diameter of which is larger than that of the orifice of the rod, is engaged between the wall 13 and the said rod. Moreover, the spindle has a length sufficient to form a protuberance with respect to the rod on which the link 21 is articu-35 lated, which link develops perpendicularly to the said spindle. The clearance between the head of the spindle and the wall 13 is small, which prevents unexpected removal of the spindle.
In order to assist the manoeuvring of the rod in TRADUCTION CERTIFIf-E CONFORME A L'ORIGINAL A C. PERROT, Expert Prts la cour d'Appel de Toulouse France 1 - AVR. 1996 <3fAKETUR- a direction^ corresponding to that oifhh^npnn'i rig* nY th* slats and .in order- to compensate fo'r the moment of resistance created by the weight of the latter by .reason of the offset of their centre of gravity with respect to 5 the axis of rotation of the corresponding bar, provision is made for a compensation spring 22 fastened, on the one hand, to one of the movable elements of the movement transmission and, on the other hand, to a fixed point of the upright, the said spring 22 stressing the movement 10 transmission in the direction of opening of the slats 4.
Preferably, the compensation spring, which may be a coil spring, is fastened to the manoeuvring rod. Preferably, so as to balance the forces on the two pivot pieces 9 equipping each bar 3, provision is made for two 15 movement transmissions with spring housed, respectively, in one upright and in the other. However, only one of these two transmissions will interact directly with the motor assembly.
Each link 8 is fastened rigidly to the correspon-20 ding pivot piece 9 by a longilinear blocking member 25, such as a rivet or a screw engaged in a perforation of the link, on the one hand, and in a longitudinal perforation 24 of the insert piece 9 on the other hand, the latter perforation passing right through the insert piece 25 and being made along the central axis of symmetry of the said piece, the said perforation emerging in a diametrical slot 23 dividing the stud 11 into two parts, the insertion of the blocking member in the longitudinal perforation and then between the two parts of the stud 30 radially expanding the latter so as to block it by adherence in the housing 12. Moreover, this blocking member fastens the link 8 to the terminal part 9B of the insert piece 8. In order to prevent any sliding of the link with respect to the corresponding insert piece 35 during transmission of forces, the terminal part 9B of each pivot piece 9 includes a diametrical slot 10 hollowed out in its planar front face in a manner intersecting the longitudinal perforation 24, in which slot the corresponding link 8 is engaged and fastened.
TRADUCTION CERTIFlft CONFORME A L'ORIGINAL C. PERROT, Expert prts la Cour d'Appel de Toulouse France 1 - /w°. lyyb - 8 - 7S J NE VARIETUR — J yAR|£TUI n° 7 y f 1?^ iment, the termina.
According to another embodiment, the terminal part 9B of each link is extended axially by a protuberance of polygonal" cross-section and the link .has an orifice of polygonal cross-section having a shape which 5 complements that of the cross-section of the protuberance, the said link being engaged on the protuberance via its polygonal orifice.
According to the preferred embodiment, the motor assembly of the actuating mechanism is housed in a casing 10 26 inserted in the vertical housing of the corresponding upright 2 by passing through a front opening 27 made in one of the flanges of the said upright. Moreover, the assembly is fastened removably to the said upright. Moreover, the link 21 is not fastened to the articulation 15 spindle 31 but only engaged on the latter. Thus, by lateral movement of the casing, the dimensions of the opening 27 lending themselves thereto, it is possible to disengage the link 21 from the spindle 31 and to withdraw the motor assembly with a view to replacing it or repair-20 ing it.
The casing 26 is preferably equipped with a base 28 for fastening to the upright 2, this base bearing against the peripheral border of the opening 27. A motor assembly with a casing is shown, in particular, in 25 Figures 2 and 5 to 8.
According to a first embodiment, the motor assembly consists of a toothed wheel 16 mounted rotationally in the casing and of a worm 15 mounted rotationaily in the casing and interacting in engagement 30 with the toothed wheel 16. This toothed wheel is keyed on the shaft 19 which, outside the casing, receives the lever 20 so as to fasten it. The worm 15 is keyed on a shaft 29 engaged in a perforation of the base 28 of the casing 26 in order to receive, outside the casing 26, a 35 manoeuvring member which may be a handle 14 or, alternatively, an electric motor. The worm and toothed-wheel assembly is designed so as to be non-reversing, that is to say that the rotational movement of the worm and of the wheel may be obtained only by applying a drive torque to the worm alone. Thus, the external stresses exerted on the slats 4 by the wind, for.example, will not be able to modify their angular ' position in the opening of the window.
If the manoeuvring member is a handle, it is necessary for the latter to be spaced away from any wall which would develop perpendicularly to the window contiguously with the latter. For this reason, the central geometrical axis of symmetry of the worm 15 and of its 10 shaft 29 extend in a direction which is oblique with respect to the plane of the opening defined by the frame, the handle 14 carried by the shaft 29 being offset towards the said opening. Such an arrangement is shown in Figures 11 and 12.
As a variant, the motor assembly may consist of an electric motor which may or may not be housed in a casing and associated with controls outside the window.
Finally, it should be noted that the window as described has sealing elements such as seals arranged, in 2 0 particular, in grooves made in the heels of the slats 4, these seals in the closure position of the slats being compressed in their groove by the lower part of the slat immediately above. The window will include along the vertical edges of the opening defined by the frame 25 leaktight seals having the form of vertical beading.
