Patents Form No: 5
NEW ZEALAND PATENTS ACT 1953 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION "METHOD FOR SUBMARINE OPERATIONS AT EXTREME SEA DEPTHS"
We, O.C. OSTLUND A/S, of Ovre Stokkavei 21, 4000 Stavanger, Norway, a Norwegian Company, hereby delcare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
(1) (fallowed by page 1A)
1A
210145
The invention is related to a method concerning submarine operations at extreme sea depths.
As extraction of natural materials are increasingly performed at greater sea depths, the requirement for inspection and possibilities of performing work of different kinds at those sea depths, also exists. Even if the operation depths for divers is constantly increased by new technology and new procedures, there will exist need in this area for the use of divers' bells of different kinds, even if the possibilities of remote controlled units is expanded.
Divers' bells built for such sea depths which are required, will be very expensive and the design, very complicated and correspondingly, voluminous.
By the method according to the invention some of those disadvantages connected to design and construction of such divers' bells for extreme sea depths, are avoided, according to the features stated in the appended claim.
The diver's bell designed for a sea depth corresponding to a pressure D^ may be used at considerably greater sea depths, corresponding to a pressure D3 if the internal atmosphere of the diver's bell is maintained at a pressure D2 in such a way that the difference between D^ and is always kept less than D^.
In this way the possibilities for the use of divers1 bells is considerably expanded.
2
2110145
Diving below the depths for which the divers1 bell is designed requires the personnel which is to be accommodated.,: in the diver's bell during submerging, to undergo compression in such a way that they can live at the pressure D£. Thereafter the diver's bell may be submerged to a depth corresponding to the pressure D^ and inspection works or other works may be performed, whereafter the diver's bell may be lifted and the personnel in the diver's bell will have to go through a phase of decompression.
By the method according to the invention the application of the diver's bell is considerably expanded and principally this is only limited by the maximum acceptable compression pressure for the personnel.

Claims (1)
1. A method for submarine operations at extreme sea depths, characterized in the use of a diver's bell designed and constructed to withstand an outer pressure , to submersion to a sea depth where an outer pressure exists, which is considerably larger than , whereby the internal pressure in the diver's bell is an increased pressure in such a way that the difference between the pressures D3 and D2 is always less than the pressure D1 for which the diver's bell is designed, and wherein the personnel in the diver's bell go through a phase of compression before submersion.
