P.O. Journal, No: 2 03$ C /%b^'4r : V >' -6&PRi983 0 *-c ;No. Date: ;NEW ZEALAND ;patents act, 1955 ;completh" sphci fication ;"BOARD BLANK FOR BASE OF A FOLDING CARTON" ;*/we. FIT CONTAINER AG, of Bahnhofstrasse 8, CH-7000 Chur, Switzerland, a Swiss corporation, hereby declare the invention, for which ix/ we pray that a patent may be granted to and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- _ 1 _ (followed by page la) 2038 03 -I a The invention presented here concerns a blank made of board oui cable ijr the base of :» ro l>'.'eci carton whereby the adjacent side flaps can be folded over and bent upwards along crosswise laid creases and fastened at the corners with locking flaps or the like being part of trie blank.
When bending the side flaps which are a part of the blank there is always the necessity to provide for an adequately stiff connection of the adjacent upright flaps. In general it is customary to connect these upright side flaps standing in juxta position to each other by overlapping flaps or tongues which are glued or locked together. What is more this requires not only the addition of an adhesive but also an additional appliance to glue these flaps or tongues which are attached to the upright end flaps of the respective carton.
The object of this invention is to remove the still existing difficulties anil repLace che previously customary glued joint resp. tlie simple locked joint by a joint which is not only easier to produce but is also particularly rigid and thereby secure. 2 038 0 3 According to the invention this is solved by adding one or more locking components to at Least one of the foldover end flaps positioned adjacent to the end flap. The locking flaps or tongues at both ends or the foldover end flaps are bent over along tne crease ana locked into the slots in the adjoining side tlaps. This is a particularly simple lock connecting the already upright side flaps by means of the above mentioned locking flaps and producing a connecting joint of special rigidity by virtue of this lock.
A particularly appropriate form of design allows for the locking tLaps or tongues being part of the locking mechanism to be positioned along the outer edges of the end flaps thus enabling them to be folded along the appropriate creases.
Should there be only a single locking flap running full length along the top edge of the end flap, then the locking flaps or tongues are positioned at each end of the outer edges of the single locking component and can be folded over along the creases running along the outer edges.
Furthermore it has proved advantageous to have a centre groove running along the line bisecting the angle of the corner piece positioned between the adjoining side and end flaps on each corner of the blank. This centre groove may also have a slot worked into a part of its length which would weaken the material which in turn would ease the folding over of this corner piece into a double fold. i As far as the appropriate slots appertaining to the locking j flaps are concerned which are let into the adjoining side j flaps, it is advisable for the ease of the operation to have i them U-shaped. This would prevent tearing on the one hand and ; smooth the slipping in of the locking flaps or tongues on the j other. | i 2 03803 If the previously described blank is only intended to be used as base o£ a carton, then the side and end flaps adjacent to the bottom are to be put in an upright position and the locking components attached to the upright end flaps to be folded over, so that they are on the same level as the adjacent side flaps and can be slipped into the slots cut into the upright side flaps thereby locking the adjacent upright side and end flaps. in the case of the foldover flaps running the full lenght of an upright end flap being folded over 180° into the inside of the carton, then the locking flaps or tongues can be fitted into the appropriate slots of the adjoining upright side panel from the inside.
It is likewi.se appropriate to fold in the corner pieces between the upright flaps along the score and slot bisecting the angle of the .corner piece thereby making a corner piece flap and then folding this inwards against the upright end. The foldover flap with the locking tongues is then folded inwards and the locking flaps or tongues inserted into the appropriate slots in the adjoining side panel from the inside, thereby securing the lock against the possibility of undesirable opening.
Further details of the invention presented herewith are outlined in the following explanations and drawings showing an applied project as an example as well as the consequential claims.
The illustrations are: Fig. 1 Carton blank viewed from above Fig. 2 Diagram of one end of the partly erected blank Fig. 3 Diagram of half a carton seen in the direction of arrow A and 203803 Fig. 4 Diagram olf half a carton seen in the direction of arrow B The flat carton blank 2 viewed from above in fig. 1 is the base 1 of a carton showing the bottom 3, two longitudinal side walls 4 and positioned at a right angle to 4 two narrower side walls 5 which are the ends. To facilitate erecting the side walls 4 and 5 a groove 8 has been pressed into the blank 2 along the crease lines 6 and 7 which cross.
Groove 8 runs between the two side walls 4 and corner pieces 11 and between narrower side walls 5 and corner pieces 11.
Furthermore, this corner piece 11 is provided with a crease and central score 13 running along a line dividing the angle between end and side walls along the outer corner edges 9 and 10. To facilitate creasing along the central score 13 and to ease movement of the material, a slot 15 is made in each corner piece 11. Further, square mortise cutouts 16 are made in the corner pieces 11 to reduce the length of the outer edges 17 to half the length 1 of the narrower side walls 5.
As seen in fig. 1 additional foldover flaps with locking parts 19 have been added to the side walls 5 which stretch along the full length 1 of the side walls 5 and can be folded over along the creases 20 in the direction of the arrow 21 towards the inside of the narrower side walls 5.
These foldover locking parts 19 also show two locking flaps one each end 23 which are part of the locking device and c^n^ be folded over by 90° in the direction of the arrows 26^^L^ng 203803 the ereasoa 25.
These tuck-in locking flaps 23 which are part of the fold-over lock mg parts 19 fit into the "U" shaped slots positioned in area 28 in the side walls 4 close to the corner piece 1 1 .
Once the carton blank 2 as depicted in fig. 1 has been die-cut, creased, grooved and/or scored 8 and 12 as well as 20 and 25, the side walls 4 and end walls 5 which are positioned opposite one another in pairs are erected in the usual manner and the corner pieces 11 are folded along the central score 13 forming the tongues marked 29 and which then face each other as shown in fig. 2. Continuing the folding procedure the end walls 5 are pressed against the upright tongues 29 in the direction of arrows 30 and subsequently the locking parts 19 in their capacity as foldover end flaps are folded over by '.BO0 in the direction of arrows 2] against the inside of the end walls 5. The locking • flaps 23 attached to the ends of the locking parts 19 are bent over by 90° against the foldover end flap, thereby avoiding the top edges 31 of the side walls 4 so that they finally lie flat against the inside 32 of the side walls 4 as illustrated in fig. 3. The tips 33 of the locking flaps 23 positioned at the end of the locking end flaps 23 are then slipped into the locking slots 27 which are positioned in the side walls 4 by appropriate tools so that they 'are hooked into the top edges 34, thereby forming a safe connection between the adjacent side and end walls 4 and 5. As the foldover locking parts 19 secure the tongues 29 of the fol-ded-in corner pieccs 11, a particularly stiff and safe connection between the side walls 4 and 5 of the carton base 1 is assured. 2 038 0 3 Summary Fig. 1 shows the flat carton blank 2 seen from above which constitutes the base 1 of a carton. The side walls 4 and 5 which are to be erected are attached to the bottom 3 and interconnected by the corner pieces 11 which are erected and folded along the central score 13. Furthermore, the side walls 5 are extended by the foldover locking part 19 and the locking flaps 23 which project outwards and form the locking parts. These locking parts are to be bent over and into the interior of the carton in the direction of the arrows 21 so that the locking flaps 23 with their locking tips 33 are inserted into the slots 27 in the adjacent sides walls 4 thereby connecting the sides walls ■! and 5. 2 038 0 3 Reference Table (Guide) 1 Carton base 2 Carton blank 3 Bottom 4 Side wall Side/end wall 6 Creases 7 Creases 8 Score in 6/7 9 Outer corner edges of 4 Outer corner edges of 5 11 Corner pieces 12 Grooves of 9/10 13 Central score 14 Corners of 11 Slot la 1 I 16 Mortise in 11 17 Outer edges of 11 18 Outer edge of 5 19 Locking parts of 5 2 0 Creases of 18 21 Arrow 22 Interior sides of 5 23 Locking flaps of 19 24 Outer corner creases of 19 Creases of 24 26 Arrows to 23 27 Slots 28 Areas near 27 29 Tongues of 11 3 0 Arrow:, 3 1 Top edges of 4 32 Interior sides of 4 33 Locking tips of 23 3 4 Top edges a) Length of edge of 18 1) Length of 5 cL Angle of 1 1 203S03
