Ionisk væske omfattende et dialkylsubstituert imidazoliumhalogenid hvor minst en av alkylsubstituentene har 6 karbonatomer eller fler, en fremgangsmåte for fremstilling av slike imidazoliumhalogenider, og anvendelse derav for hydro- karbonomdannelsesreaksjoner slik som oligomerisering eller polymerisering av olefiner og for alkylering av paraffiner, isoparaffmer eller aromater med olefiner. Polymerisering av C4 raffmater ved bruk av disse ioniske væskene som katalysatorer muliggjør at en mye høyere prosentandel av n-butener kan inkorporeres i produktpolymeren enn det som ville være mulig i konvensjo- nenelle kationiske polymerisasjonsprosesser.Ionic liquid comprising a dialkyl-substituted imidazolium halide wherein at least one of the alkyl substituents has 6 or more carbon atoms, a process for preparing such imidazolium halides, and their use for hydrocarbon formation reactions such as oligomerization or polymerization of olefins or for alkylation of olefins or for alkylation of olefins or . Polymerization of C4 precursors using these ionic liquids as catalysts enables a much higher percentage of n-butenes to be incorporated into the product polymer than would be possible in conventional cationic polymerization processes.
