Abstract

The electrolysis includes an anode and cathode apparatus (1,2) and means by which powdered raw material is transferred from a silo (5) or equivalent to a feeder (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) with which the raw material is fed into the electrolyte melt. (23). The feeder includes a box (15) which controls the feed of feedstock to which box a feed tube (14) for feedstock is connected. The feeder means is provided with a feeder (13) arranged to operate within the box 15, connected to a piston rod (11) or similarly to a vibrator (10), with which a substantial vertical vibration (V) of the feeder is provided. The open lower end of the box (15) is located near the surface (22) of the electrolyte melt (23) above it, to operate within the electrolyte crust (25).
