Abstract

In pressure electrolysis plants, water is decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen. During this process, the electrolysis cell block is in a pressure-resistant encapsulation and has an electrically nonconductive fluid kept at the working pressure of the pressure electrolysis flowing round it. The conductive fluids used are feed-water and hydrogen. The pressure of the fluid is controlled by means of the pressure of one or both product gases, for example the pressure in the hydrogen separator. The fluid inside the encapsulation can be heated to establish the starting temperature of the process, while cooling is carried out during stationary operation by indirect heat exchange in the encapsulation.
