Abstract

Compounds which contain a polar chiral grouping (moiety) of the formula <IMAGE> are suitable for use as a liquid-crystalline medium or as a chiral constituent of liquid-crystalline media in electro-optical switching and display elements which are based on the utilisation of the electroclinic effect and where the liquid-crystalline medium, when in the operating state, is present in the @A, @B or @E phase. These compounds are derivatives of alpha -chlorocarboxylic acids (I), alpha -hydroxypropionic acid (II), proline (III), epoxy compounds (IV) or their thioanalogues (V).
