Description
The present invention relates to a device for dispensing a mixture of propellant and product from an aerosol container under pressure. In a preferred form, the product is a drug.
Aerosols containing a mixture of drug and propellant are normally used, e.g. in the treatment of disturbances in the upper and lower respiratory tract. For the treatment of such disorders, drugs are dispensed in spray form to a patient by means of an oral or nasal inhalation device comprising a housing or sleeve in which there is an aerosol container under pressure and a mouthpiece or nozzle leading out from the tubular housing. During use, the aerosol container is placed in the housing which is then held by the patient in a more or less upright position and the mouthpiece or nozzle of the inhalation device is placed in the patient's mouth or nostrils. The patient inhales while causing the aerosol container to open the outlet valve of the container and deliver drug from the container through the mouthpiece or nozzle into the patient's mouth or nostril.
With all such devices, the patient dispenses medication by pressing on a part of the aerosol container that protrudes from the housing. When such pressure is exerted, the aerosol container is displaced in relation to the housing and thereby opens the outlet valve of the aerosol container. Some patients, e.g. children, the elderly, the arthritic and the paralyzed have difficulty holding the inhalation device against the mouth or nostril, while the aerosol container is pressed down relative to the housing to open the outlet valve. Others have difficulty coordinating the movements of their hands with the inhalation and may consequently not take the desired dosage of the medication.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a way to make it easier for such patients to dispense medication from an aerosol container and also to provide a way to substantially close the aerosol container, the aerosol housing and the mouthpiece or nozzle when the device is not in use.
According to the present invention, a device is provided for dispensing a mixture of propellant and product from a container under pressure with an outlet valve comprising a housing which accommodates or is suitable to accommodate an aerosol container under pressure and with an outlet spout near one end thereof, a cover with a pivotable connection to the housing near the other end of the housing, the cover being movable from a closed position in which it closes the outlet spout to an open position in which the outlet spout is exposed, and an actuating lever arranged for pivotable movement relative to the housing so that it can be closed in-to a part of the housing not covered by the cover and having a part which, when and only when, the cover is in its open position and the lever is closed against the housing exerts a force on the container which displaces the container relative to the housing and thus opens the outlet valve to the container and dispenses the mixture from the container through the outlet spout.
The outlet spout may be constructed as a mouthpiece to be placed in the mouth of a patient or it may be constructed as a nozzle for insertion into a patient's nostrils.
In preferred embodiments, the cover is hinged to the body and the activation lever is hinged to the cover.
To utførelsesformer av oppfinnelsen er illustrert i de vedlagte skjematiske tegninger, hvori: Fig. 1 er en avbildning av en inhaleringsanordning ifølge en utførelsesform av oppfinnelsen som viser et deksel derav i åpen stilling og anordningen i en aktivert stilling, og Two embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the attached schematic drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is an illustration of an inhalation device according to an embodiment of the invention showing a cover thereof in an open position and the device in an activated position, and
fig. 2 viser anordningen fra fig. 1 perspektivisk tatt fra hverandre; fig. 2 shows the device from fig. 1 perspective taken apart;
fig. 3 is an illustration corresponding to fig. 1, but showing another embodiment; and
fig. 4 viser anordningen på fig. 3 tatt fra hverandre.fig. 4 shows the device in fig. 3 taken apart.
1) kan plasseres i legemet 1 In the embodiment illustrated in fig. 1 and 2, an inhalation device for drugs contained in an aerosol can comprises a hollow body 1 which is open at one end which is here considered to be the top of the body for ease of description. When the device is in use, the body is normally held by a patient in this position. The body has an outlet spout 2 which protrudes laterally from near the other, i.e. lower end of the body. An aerosol can 3 under pressure (Fig. 1) can be placed in the body 1
i snudd stilling som vist i fig. 1. 1). in an inverted position as shown in fig. 1. An outlet valve element 4 of the jug 3 is connected to a foot block 5 at the bottom of the body 1. The foot block 5 has an outlet passage 6 (fig. 1).
When the can 3 is pressed down in relation to the foot block 5, the valve element 4 will of course remain stationary as it hangs together with the foot block, and the relative movement between the aerosol can and the valve element will open the valve element 4, so that a dose of the drug and propellant mixture will be dispensed from the can 3 , go through the passage 6 and enter the patient's mouth through the outlet spout 2.
A cover 7 has a hinge connection near the open top of the body 1. For this purpose, the cover 7 has near its upper end internal pins 8 which sit in holes 13 in the body. Because of this hinge connection, the cover 7 can be moved between a closed position in which its lower end part encloses the outlet spout 2 and an open position in which the outlet spout is exposed. During use, the cover is swung around approx. 180°C to the position shown in fig. 1. The cover 7 has two external pins 9 whose centers are offset in relation to the centers of the pins 8. An activation lever 10 has near its upper end holes 11 in which the pins 9 enter, so that the lever has a hinged connection with the body through the cover. This lever 10 fits around a part of the body 1 that is not covered by the cover 7. In certain positions, the underside of the lever roof 12 will act as a base against the aerosol container 3. It is preferred that the pins 8 have a diameter that is approximately half the diameter of the external pins 9. The pin 8 is arranged for an epicycloidal movement when the cover is lifted to activate the device, and when the lever is pressed down, fire the device. Alternatively (not shown), the pin 8 could be arranged for a hypocycloid movement.
1. Den relative bevegelsen til stiftene 8 To make the device ready for use, the patient opens the lid 7, preferably to the fully open position which is illustrated in fig. 1. The relative movement of the pins 8
1). and 9 moves the aerosol container 3 and the body 1 in an upward direction in relation to the lever 10, to a position where the aerosol container makes contact with the underside of a lever roof 12 and continued movement of the cover 7 causes the lever 10 to turn upwards and outwards to an "activated position " (Fig. 1).
For å bruke anordningen setter pasienten utløpstuten 2To use the device, the patient puts the outlet spout 2
Under sammenpressingen utøver undersiden av spaktaket 12 press på aerosolbeholderen 3, hvilket får ventilelementet 4 til å utlevere en dose gjennom utløpspassa-sjen 6 og utløpstuten 2 inn i pasientens munn. into his mouth and fires the aerosol by compressing the body 1 and the lever 10. During the compression, the underside of the lever roof 12 exerts pressure on the aerosol container 3, which causes the valve element 4 to deliver a dose through the outlet passage 6 and the outlet spout 2 into the patient's mouth .
If necessary, the patient can take additional doses by pressing the body and lever together repeatedly, or he can close the device by lowering the cover 7 over the outlet spout 2.
The second embodiment shown in fig. 3 and 4 have largely similar construction and operation to that shown in fig. 1 and 2, and will therefore not be described in detail.
I fig. In fig. 3 and 4, the same reference number is used as in fig. 1 and 2 for the corresponding parts. However, a number of differences from the first embodiment must be pointed out. Firstly, the arrangement of the pins 8 and 9 and the holes 11 and 13 are different. The pins 8 are formed on the outside of the body 1 (instead of the inside of the cover 7) and the holes 13 are formed eccentrically through the pins 9 on the cover 7 (instead of through the body 1). Geometrically, the effect is the same as that achieved by the first embodiment, but the second embodiment has the advantage that it is easier to manufacture. Secondly, the end of the aerosol can away from the outlet spout is covered to a greater extent than in the first embodiment by the arrangement of flaps 14 rotatably connected to the rest of the body 1 by an integral plastic hinge whose position is indicated by a broken line 15. The flap extends partly under the lever roof 12.
Although the jug 3 in both of the above-described embodiments can be removed from the device and makes it possible to insert a new jug, the device could be designed to be discarded after a single jug has been emptied, and in this case the jug could be inserted in during fabrication and did not need to be removable later.
