Description
"Method and apparatus for deriving time information from a carrier signal".
The invention relates to digital signaling systems and is more particularly aimed at deriving time information from digital signaling systems.
When digital data is transmitted using electrical, acoustic, mechanical or other means, it is necessary at the receiving end to extract time information from the received signal
for å identifisere starttiden for hvert overført digitalt symbol. Visse teknikker for utledning av symboltidsstyringen to identify the start time of each transmitted digital symbol. Usually, a carrier wave signal is modulated with digital symbols at the transmitter end, and the symbol rate is proportional to the carrier frequency, usually either as a multiple of this or with an integer ratio to it. In systems where the received signal has become noisy, it is a particularly acute problem to obtain accurate time information. A type of system where a noisy transmission path occurs is e.g. a system for so-called "logging while drilling", where well log data is transferred to the surface of a borehole through a drill pipe during the drilling operation. In such a case, it is difficult to transmit collected data to the surface by electrical means, if the drill pipe is not provided with a special insulated conductor including means to form the necessary connections for the conductor at the drill pipe connections. Consequently, different systems have been proposed for the transmission of log data acoustically, either through the drill pipe or in the drilling fluid. usually the relevant data is converted into digital form and then used to modulate a carrier wave signal, e.g. by phase shift keying (PSK), frequency shift keying (FSK) or amplitude shift keying (ASK). At the surface, the acoustic signal is detected and demodulated to produce the desired information release (see e.g. US patent no. 3,886,495). In systems of this type or others where transmission- . the medium deviates from the ideal, the signal is exposed to significant amounts of noise and this makes it difficult to extract symbol time information. Certain techniques for deriving the symbol timing control
er beskrevet i artikkelen "Recent Advances in Symbol Synchr<p>ni-zation** av W. N. Waggener, i Vol. 12, nr. 1 av Instrument Society of America Transactions, side 7. is described in the article "Recent Advances in Symbol Synchr<p>ni-zation** by W. N. Waggener, in Vol. 12, No. 1 of the Instrument Society of America Transactions, page 7.
When digital data is transmitted by modulating a carrier wave and the carrier frequency is in coherent relation to the symbol rate, time information from the carrier wave can be used as an aid in the derivation of symbol time information. As a numerical example, a case where the symbol rate is e.g. 600 symbols per Sec. and the modulated carrier frequency e.g. 2,400 hertz, which means that there are 4 carrier wave periods for each symbol period. Simple division of the carrier frequency by a factor of 4 will here give a clock frequency equal to the symbol rate. Although the divided frequency would be essentially correct, the division process involves an ambiguous phase that needs to be clarified*
Symbol time information can also be derived from the digital data independently of the carrier frequency as described in the above-mentioned publication* However, symbol time information can only be obtained when a symbol transitions from one value to another value. Thus, longer periods without such a transition will make it difficult to maintain symbol synchronization. When unusually high noise levels occur during transmission, the problem of maintaining synchronization is also accentuated.
It is an object of this invention to provide a system which reduces to a minimum errors which occur during the detection of time information.
In accordance with this and other objects, one aspect of this invention is directed to a method of deriving timing information from a carrier signal modulated with digital symbols, wherein the symbol rate is proportional to the carrier frequency, wherein a phase-locked loop generates an error signal and comprises an oscillator which is influenced by the error signal, and in which the following steps are included: generating a first signal under the influence of the carrier wave signal substantially at the symbol rate, generating a second signal which is influenced by syrabolic transitions and combining the first signal, the second signal< p>g a signal derived from the oscillator to generate the error signal.
Another aspect of the invention is directed to an apparatus for deriving time information from a carrier wave signal modulated with digital symbols, where the symbol rate is in relation to the carrier frequency, comprising a phase-locked loop with an oscillator and one device for generating an error signal to control the oscillator , a device responsive to the carrier wave to generate a first signal substantially at the symbol rate, a device responsive to symbol transitions to generate a second signal, and the error signal generator generator responsive to the first signal, the second signal and a signal derived from the oscillator for generating an error signal to control the oscillator.

Inngangene til summeringspunktet for summeringsforsterkeren 23 som skjer over veiemotstander Ri og R2 ér forbundet med utganger på respektive fasekomparatorer 31 og 32. figure 3 is an overview diagram partly in block form showing the present invention incorporated in a system for borehole logging. Figure 1 shows a block core for a system according to this invention t for deriving time information from a received input or carrier wave signal modulated with digital symbols. The basic time management is provided by a phase-locked loop 20 which, among other things, comprises a voltage-controlled oscillator 21, a loop filter 22 and a device 23 for generating an error signal. in this embodiment the error signal device is a summing amplifier comprising an operational amplifier 24 arranged in a conventional manner to work as a summing amplifier, i.e. with a suitable feedback resistor and a summing point at the amplifier's inverting input. The inputs to the summation point for the summation amplifier 23, which occurs across resistors Ri and R2, are connected to the outputs of respective phase comparators 31 and 32.
The phase comparator 31 receives as one of its input signals a signal with a characteristic frequency f^ which is derived from the oscillator 21 through a digital clock division circuit 40. The other input on the comparator 31 is derived from the carrier wave for the received signal. A carrier clock signal is obtained from the carrier and goes as input to a counter 50 whose characteristic counter cycle is set to the ratio between the carrier frequency and the symbol rate or rate, which ratio is assumed for clarity to be an integer N. The output of the counter 50 which consequently essentially corresponds to the symbol rate is connected to the phase comparator 31 through an AND gate 55.
One input to the phase comparator 32 is a signal at a reference frequency fj which is also derived from the oscillator 21 by means of the clock divider circuit 40 and this frequency is largely the same as f^. The second input of the phase comparator 32 corresponds to the output of a transition detector 60 whose output is a measure of the detected symbol transitions in the symbol-modulated carrier wave input signal. In particular, the input to the transition detector 60 is derived from the received input data using conventional filter and limiting circuits so that a "clean" version of the received symbol data is obtained. the output of the error level indicating loop filter 22 is connected to a threshold detector 70 whose output is a logical "0" if a prescribed threshold level is exceeded. On the other hand, the output of the threshold detector is a logic<M>1<H> if the threshold level is not exceeded, the output of the threshold* detector 70 forms the second input to the AND gate 55.
Den nødvendige system-tidsstyring blir f.eks. oppnådd ved hjelp av klokkedivisjonskretsen 40* The operation of the system in fig. 1 is as follows» The output of the transition detector is phase-compared with the frequency f2 derived from the phase-locked oscillator 21. The resulting signal (herein generally referred to as the "second error component signal") is weighed by the resistor R2 and applied as an error signal driving the phase-locked loop to the frequency and phase of the symbol transitions. The output of the transition detector 60 also resets the counter 50; When the system is started, the counter 50 can arbitrarily contain any count. The first reset signal from the transition detector 60 thus synchronizes the counter with the symbol signals so that the carrier wave can suitably replace the symbol transitions if these should cease for a time. Once the loop 20 is in phase locking, the error signal in the loop, as measured at the output of the loop filter 22, will be sufficiently small that the output from the threshold detector 70 is a logic "1" which in turn opens the AND gate 55. Then clock pulses from the counter 50 led to the phase comparator 31 for phase comparison with the signal at frequency f^. The phase error indicated at the output of the comparator 31 (generally referred to here as "the first error component signal") is weighed by the resistor Ri and summed by the summing amplifier 23 with it measured phase errors based on symbol transitions. It is a feature of this invention that if no symbol transitions occur for a period of time, the carrier clock counter 50 maintains the loop synchronization. When symbol transitions occur, the phase error contribution based on symbol transitions is given more weight than the phase error contribution based on the carrier clock, due to the different values of resistors Ri and R2, so that the loop tends to readjust the phase of the loop oscillator to correspond to the actual symbol transition timings in The resistor Ri is variable to facilitate adjustment of the weighting ratio when desired* If the loop loses its lock, an increase in the loop error signal will cause the error contribution due to the carrier clock 50 to be blocked due to the AND gate 55 being disabled . This blocking effect continues until symbol transitions occur which re-lock the phase-locked loop. The necessary system time management is e.g. achieved using the clock division circuit 40*
The voltage controlled oscillator 21 is preferably set to run at a frequency which is a multiple of the symbol rate so that the digital clock division circuit 40 can deliver several phases of the reference frequency. This makes it possible to select the optimal clock phase for the two phase comparators and allows compensation for any known fixed phase shift between
■ • ■icarrier overheads and symbol frequency passes (using appropriate frequencies f^ and f )* Preferably, the carrier frequency should be a relatively high multiple of the symbol rate or rate to minimize the phase bias due to resolution in the counter 50. In cases where the carrier frequency is only a small multiple of the symbol rate, a coherent frequency multiplication circuit can be used to increase the carrier reference clock frequency.
A less complicated version of the system in fig. 1 is shown in fig. 4. In this embodiment, the symbol transition detector 60 resets the counter 50 every time a symbol transition occurs* A single phase comparator 31 is used and this derives an error signal when comparing the output of the clock division circuit 40 with the output of the counter 50. When there are no symbol transitions, the counter runs - free<4*>and maintains loop locking.
It is easy to see from fig. 4 that the counter 50 emits an output pulse under the influence of a reset pulse and/or when it reaches its preset count. Should a synchronous counter be selected as the counter 50, these two events should occur within the same carrier wave clock period so that both result in a counter output pulse. An inherent disadvantage of using a synchronous counter is due to the fact that the counter's output is in phase with the carrier clock and not necessarily with the data signal. Although this embodiment is less complicated than the system of fig. 1* thus represents the resolution in the counter 50 a limiting factor when it comes to performance.
Det skal imidlertid The resolution error can be improved by using an asynchronous counter. This generates an output pulse as an immediate response to a reset pulse when a symbol transition is detected. Accordingly, the accurate phase of the data signal is delivered to the phase comparator 31 so that the phase-locked loop is maintained in accurate lock to the symbol transitions. However, it should
bemerkes at hvis bærebølgefrekvensen er meget høyere enn data* frekvensen er faseforskjellen mellom bærebølgen og symbolovergangene så liten at den kan være akseptabel selv ved bruk av en synkron teller. note that if the carrier frequency is much higher than the data* frequency, the phase difference between the carrier and the symbol transitions is so small that it may be acceptable even when using a synchronous counter.
The above-mentioned system for deriving time control signals has been found applicable in the field of borehole logging and more particularly in the aforementioned technique of "logging-during-drilling<*>". This apparatus which is capable of realizing this technique is shown in fig. .3 in connection with a typical drilling arrangement 100. The tower 102 carries a drill string 104 which is led down into a drill hole 107 and suspended in a hook 105 by means of a swivel 106. 110 and a length of drill pipe 112. The drill pipe 112 is connected to a kelly 114 which is passed through a rotating drive mechanism 116 driven by one or more motors 118.
At the entrance to the borehole 107, a conventional circulation system 115 for drilling fluid or mud is placed. This system comprises a pump 120 which circulates sludge from a tank 122
inn i én slamledning 124 og derefter ned gjennom kellyen 114, into one mud line 124 and then down through the kelly 114,
borestrengen 104 og ut gjennom åpninger i borkronen 108. Slammet går så tilbake oppad i ringroinmet 126 og trer ut fra foringsrøret 128 gjennom en åpning 130 inn i én slamreturledning 132 tilbake til slamtanken 122. the drill string 104 and out through openings in the drill bit 108. The mud then goes back up into the annulus 126 and emerges from the casing 128 through an opening 130 into one mud return line 132 back to the mud tank 122.

U.S-patent 3.309.656. placed down in the borehole near the drill bit 1Q8. The solution for transmitting signals up through the borehole which is perhaps the most promising so far consists in a system which comprises a signal generator 136 which is operated under control to selectively interrupt the flow of mud so that an acoustic signal is impressed on it in this way. The acoustic signal propagates upwards through the circulating mud in the drill string 104 and is detected at the surface by means of a transducer 138 arranged on the mud line 124. A sensing or measuring unit 140 is arranged for sensing the various conditions down in the borehole and for to drive the signal generator 136 in accordance with the values of the sensed conditions. A power supply unit 142 serves to energize the measuring unit 140 and comprises a turbine placed in the flow of circulating sludge. Simplicity of such a system is described in e.g. U.S. Patent 3,309,656.
The circuit described above for deriving the time control signal or time information is located at the surface to receive the filtered signal from the transducer 138 at its input.
A pump noise filter 144 removes the disturbances in the sludge caused by the pumping operation, which would otherwise greatly distort the signal from the generator 136, as described in U.S. Patent 3,742,443. The processing circuit 146 receives the filtered signal and may include additional means to improve the quality of the signal such as a bandpass filter and an automatic gain control. However, the primary function of the circuit 146 is to recover a carrier clock signal and also to demodulate the output signal from the filter 144. These tasks are performed in a well-known manner using available circuits. The above-described time recovery circuit 148 (see Figs. 1 and 2) receives two inputs 149 and 150 from the processing circuit 146, respectively the response end of the carrier clock signal and the demodulated data signal. An appropriate clock signal in phase with this data is provided by circuit 148 in accordance with the detailed explanation given above, and then becomes the input signal to data recovery circuit 162. The reconstructed clock signal is used in circuit 152 to recover the information in the data signal on line 150, which indicates the measured condition down the borehole. If PSK modulation is used, circuit 152 may operate to produce a bit decision signal from input 150 which is then passed through a differential decoder indicating the occurrence of a transition. A decommutator may also be inserted, and this works to determine the beginning of a data word under timing control of the circuit 148. Circuits of this nature are well known and need not be described in further detail here. (A presentation of "processing" and data recovery circuits is given in Viterbi, A.J.,<p>rinciples of Coherent Communication, McGraw-Hill, 1966 pp. 286-292). The data words and/or measurements that are derived from the decommutator's output can be displayed and/or recorded using a suitable device 154 as desired.
